In the USA, 9 dead now and my Facebook wall is lit up with Trumpers babbling about how the media is creating an unwarranted hysteria to take down Trump. The thread began last week when they were gloating about how the USA had zero deaths because of our superior health care system. Now our death rate is pushing 10%.

The thread began last week when they were gloating about how the USA had zero deaths because of our superior health care system. Now our death rate is pushing 10%.

Please be careful about the whole death rate thing. That number assumes that the cases we have are representative of all the current cases in the US. They aren’t. We are now testing the sickest suspected cases in hospitals. We aren’t testing the 80% of cases that experience mild symptoms, except in very narrow circumstances.

The report of the WHO team that went to China has a bunch of important information. Perhaps the most important is how the Chinese people worked together to beat back a situation that looked hopeless. Playing the blame game or posting misleading statistics will not save a single life. Making sure that the elderly in your neighborhood have someone who can buy their groceries, walk their dogs, or run their errands will save lives. Paying attention to your state or local health department will save lives. Complying with voluntary isolation or quarantine will save lives. Asking if your local first responders need assistance or support will save lives.

There will be lots of time to blame and point fingers once we’re on the back side of this thing. Facebook and Twitter will still be there.

How about we do our best to be the America we think we are.
