If the government shuts down your business (even for justified reasons), it’s not exactly hardcore leftism to suggest maybe you should be compensated to deal with this.

True, but I don't know of any restaurants here that have been shut down by anything other than demand.

See my separate thread on a presidential proclamation that promises, amongst other things, to ensure that no business will go bankrupt as a result of government action during the crisis.

You see, some people have figured out that if a lot of businesses go bust during the crisis, lots of people will lose jobs that will not miraculously pop back into existence when (in several months time, perhaps longer) the virus retreats. Because the businesses that gave people those jobs will be gone.

Every restaurant and bar in Washington State is shut down except for drive-through, take out, and delivery.

Well, government encouraging staying at home, spiking demand downward and forcing such like in S.F., seems to warrant some compensation. I just got off the phone with a manager at a local restaurant. They are closing one of their locations and are busy trying to preserve what food they can. They are probably facing bankruptcy in the near future to stave off an eviction while they restructure, attempt to reopen.

Yes, I agree. Come to think of it, we used to own a gas station and I remember the local government compensating us for three months while they did massive construction right in front of our entrance. We had to produce revenue documents for them to determine how much they needed to compensate us for the lost business.

I get that.

I would venture to say that people in Red States aren't taking it as seriously based off of my Facebook feed, and the fact that I just drove by a BBQ joint and the parking lot was nearly full. There still seems to be a not so insignificant number of people who believe this is still a hoax set up by the media to hurt Trump. Its a big nothing burger. The common flu and nothing more, so they'll be defiant to any government recommendation and go out anyway.

Hoarding food from Costco and walmart isn't helping things. If the health experts say drive throughs, takeout, and delivery is safe, and the restaurants aren't shut down in your area, everyone should be encouraged to do that to support their local businesses. Obviously be smart about it. Don't hug the delivery driver. I'm not sure if it will be enough to save these companies or prevent mass layoffs, but we need to be smart about stopping the spread of C19 while minimizing the economic impact as much as possible.

I haven't started looking up Trump's remarks bout the stimulus of 2009, but it wouldn't surprise me if he were against it.

I listened to yesterday's press conference and am most of the way through today's. I don't care right now what's happened in the past. I don't give a crap about the politics. What I see now is, for the first time, the federal government taking this seriously and finally pulling out all the stops. Today, they made it possible for people on medicare to access telecare for any doctor for free. They relaxed HIPAA regulations that restricted telehealth to certain types of platforms so that doctors can use Skype, or FaceTime, or any commonly available platform. They are collecting data from hospitals for projected needs of ventilators, PPE, etc. They gave states emergency authority to approve tests rather than requiring FDA approval. It looks like people are sitting down, figuring out what is needed, removing obstacles to getting what is needed, and working toward getting what is needed where it is needed. Hospital ships are deploying.

“F” the politics. I'm ignoring the political spin and looking at what is being done to save lives and keep people who live paycheck to paycheck afloat until we get past this. If the federal government can do something to pull us through this, I'm all for it. We'll have lots of time to argue about who deserves blame/credit.
