I think overpopulation is a problem, but the problem in the US is underpopulation.
Perhaps the least surprising, but most damaging, consequence of the recent decline in sex is that the nation’s birth rate continues to fall to near record lows. In the wake of the Great Recession, births in the United States plunged. But even as the economy has improved, births have continued to decrease since 2014 among women under 30. These birth declines among young women have far outpaced modest birth increases among women 30 and older. This has brought the projected total fertility rate to a 38-year low in the United States: 1.77 children per women for 2017.

Another consequence, then, of the sexual counter-revolution is likely to be continuing declines in American births, with all that entails for the long-term health of the labor force and taxpayer base. Over time, absent increases in immigration, continuing declines in births will translate into fewer workers and consumers—which, in turn, will mean reduced economic growth, less entrepreneurial activity, and a declining ratio of taxpayers to retirees, spelling trouble for the solvency of programs like Medicare and Social Security.

To be honest, we are not sure if sex will keep declining. The sexual pendulum could start swinging in a different direction. But if it doesn’t—if the rate that people are having real sex continues to fall... then the United States could end up in danger of following a relational and economic path already pioneered by Japan.

New parents tend to be older in general. The average age of first-time mothers is 26, up from 21 in 1972, and for fathers it’s 31, up from 27.

It showed that men in their 30s were 1.6 times as likely to have a child with autism as men younger than 30.

Jesus Christ! Only technology can save us. I just hope not to be old when I become a parent, perhaps I should freeze my sperm.

Not a "singles" topic. It is a serious threat and autism rates will increase by a lot and more people will blame vaccines.

A sex drought is not as bad as it seems. Oils serve as a lubricant, and can add to the fun.

China sought to address this problem of generational imbalance by lifting the one-child policy. If the US were more authoritarian it could seek to remedy this problem by declaring everyone to be Mormon (and lifting the ban on coffee).

In addition to being unconscionably cruel and bigoted, the Trump administration's anti-immigration policies make very poor economic sense, given the low and still declining U.S Birthrate, which is already below the required replacement rate. We are going to increasingly need more immigration to provide enough new workers to replace the increasing percentage of older workers who are reaching retirement age or dying off, and provide enough tax revenue to adequately fund essential government functions and services, including fixing our aging and dangerously crumbling infrastructure. Despite the xenophobic and insanely bigoted views of incompetent white supremacists like Steven Miller, our country needs more, not fewer immigrants. It doesn't matter what their race or skin color.

Exactly! The Democrats need to aggressively make that point! Most voters only care about the economy. The Politico article blames MeToo (young adults are scared), a bad economy, STD overreaction, and MTV for the sex drought and lower child birth rates.

I am sorry Jersey Girl, but SS is in a lot of trouble, and that was before the sex drought. Aren't you worried about SS retirement? And it is predictable that autism will go up.

It's not a joke. The sex drought is real. Look it up.

After World War II we had a baby boom. During wars we tend to have a baby bust. I don't think the end of the species is near. There could definitely be a 1-2 year demographic dip for Love During the Time of Covid-19.

This is an example of your upbringing getting in your way. You keep treating a study or something a scientist says as scripture. And you treat technology as Jesus.

Here’s an example: What percentage of people in the study of people signing up for the Israeli army had autism?

Why are you worrying today that there won’t be enough people to do the jobs that you believe won’t exist because of robots? And why do you expect “technology” to be the magic answer?

Sit down with the numbers and figure out how many way there are to address future shortfalls in SS and Medicare.
