Virus Humor

Post by _MeDotOrg »

If human beings are capable of ignorance and malevolence, they are also capable of taking horrible situations and finding something to laugh about. I sometimes think that laughter is the honey coating that lets people look at the truth.

Anyway, dark humor would seem to the order of the day:

"We've kept more promises than we've even made"
- Donald Trump
"Of what meaning is the world without mind? The question cannot exist."

That was pretty funny, thanks, honor! The stunned looks from the time travelers when the guy explains how things are done in the dumbest timeline ever are perfect.

Glad you liked it. :) Can't decide if my favorite lines are,

"How does it feel to know you are from the dumbest timeline?" "To be honest, I think some of us were beginning to piece that together.'

Or

"Is being dumb and being evil the same thing in this timeline?"

Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five was author's way of exorcising his personal demons after living through the firebombing of Dresden as an American POW in a Germany. In the novel, the protagonist was a prisoner of war who becomes unstuck in time, and the narrative shifts between World War II, the present, and life on a distant planet where he is has a baby with a film star named Montana Wildhack.

At the end of the First World War, a British soldier wrote a poem "to the man I used to be" at the beginning of the war. I think the combination of a Pandemic, Trump, and the racial upheavals in the country are creating a watershed moment in our history. Increasingly people will look at 2016 and wonder about the person they used to be.

The Chinese curse of interesting times and all that. Are there elements today reminiscent of Berlin in the 20's? In some ways it feels like the tumult of the 60's but in a more compressed time frame and with greater urgency. Right Covid-19 is killing more Americans every week than the the Axis powers during World War II.

And we have not yet come to the rest of the year and the election. So look on the bright side, as Harry Lime did in The Third Man:
In Italy for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed. They produced Michaelangelo, da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland, they had brotherly love, five hundred years of democracy and peace, and what did they produce? The cuckoo clock.
So yeah, probably some good literature ahead. Yay!

Coronavirus walks into a Wuhan bar.
The bartender says, "you new in town stranger?"
"Just flew in on a bat to the wet market", Coronavirus replies.
"Plan on staying here long?"
"Nah, I want to be a world traveler. See the sights. Maybe even get mentioned in Mormon Discussions."
The bartender chuckled. "Just like Peterson and Midgley then."

Jay Leno told a joke recently that went something like...

An orderly walks into a hospital room where the patient is wearing a mask. He says to the orderly, "Can you check if my testicles are black?"

The orderly says, "I'm not a doctor."

The patient says, "That doesn't matter. Can you just check if my testicles are black?"

The orderly looks to resist again but sees the patient is insistent, so he lifts the blanket, checks under his robe and looks at his testicles. The patient sits up straight and says, "What are you doing?"

"I'm checking your testicles like you asked."

The patient rips off the mask and says, "I want to know if my test results are back."

So Jay Leno.

This isn't precisely fitting the topic. But I like it.
