I loved this interview. Zuckerberg asked some very good question, and Fauci provided very informative and thought provoking answers. I can't help being a bit disappointed, though, that he had nothing new to say about the PittCoVacc. That's the vaccine that intrigues the most, for several reasons. Whatever vaccines eventually emerge as winners, I hope they prove to be adaptable to the microneedle patch delivery system.

Trump finally gets off the pot. Keep in mind we're pushing 4 million cases right now.

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump tweeted an image of himself wearing a face mask and indirectly called the act "patriotic" on Monday -- a clear pivot away from his earlier reluctance to wear a facial covering in public.

"We are United in our effort to defeat the Invisible China Virus, and many people say that it is Patriotic to wear a face mask when you can't socially distance," Trump tweeted on Monday -- nearly three months after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended wearing masks in public.

What a complete ass. :rolleyes: Mr. "branding is my middle name" could have done this months ago with MAGA masks or U.S. Flags or whatever to encourage his base not to be such social rejects. The man can't brand his way out of a wet paper bag much less can he supply strong leadership.

How many freaking protests and altercations could have been prevented if he had done this early on? How many cases of Covid-19 and DEATHS could have been prevented. No. He comes in with it when the wheels are falling off.

And at least as disappointing to me is that my state's share of those cases has now increased to over 10%, despite the fact that California was the first state to initiate effective lockdown procedures, and achieved commendable early success in flattening the curve. California went from bending the curve to a major coronavirus surge. What happened?

But then Memorial Day came around. By early June the numbers started creeping back up. The seven- day average for daily coronavirus cases totaled more than 2,600. Then they skyrocketed.

By July 11, the seven-day average had risen to 9,400 new cases of coronavirus per day, a more than 250% increase. The numbers fluctuate daily but the trend shows California is in surge. By July 13, Newsom ordered the shutdown of bars, indoor dining, movie theaters, wineries and some other businesses across the state again. So what went wrong?

For the past 15 weeks, sleep is about the only time when Catherine Davis isn't thinking about Covid-19.

Even then, she says she is sometimes awakened with thoughts of "How long are we going to sustain this? How long are we going to be faced with this every day?"

Davis is the nursing director at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, California, a desert town in Riverside County about 100 miles from Los Angeles. She and her colleagues are nearing exhaustion as a surge of coronavirus cases has nearly overwhelmed the staff there.

"Up until this (coronavirus outbreak), on my unit we would for the most part possibly lose one patient a year," she said. "We have had 40 deaths on our unit. However, we've treated over 700 patients."

With a death count far beyond anything anyone in her unit has ever seen in such a short time, she said the staff are emotionally and physically spent.

"We actually agreed as a staff, if we were comfortable with it, we would ensure that a patient would not die alone. So, we would take turns spending time with them and holding their hands and talking to them," Davis said.

A medical team from the US Air Force was sent to the hospital to assist with the surge of patients.

This was not how Davis envisioned what would normally be a sleepy summer in her town. California appeared to be moving in the right direction when it came to Covid-19. It was the first state to impose a stay-at-home order on March 19. Less than two months later, on May 8, the numbers had fallen enough that the state started the first phase of reopening.

Anne Rimoin, an epidemiology professor at the University of California Los Angeles, says the answer is simple. Some governments and people became complacent.

"You know, we opened up too soon. We didn't have the virus totally under control," Rimoin said.

But, she added, "People are not following the rules. They're not wearing masks. They're not social distancing. They're not doing what it is that they need to do."

In places like Riverside, San Bernardino and Orange counties, masks are no longer required. In Orange County, which borders Los Angeles County, about 100 people attended a county Board of Supervisors meeting in mid-June to speak their minds about a mask mandate that had been in place just two weeks. Every speaker except one wanted the mask mandate eliminated.

They got their wish but now Americans are getting infected at alarming rates in their community. Any epidemiologist will tell you wearing a mask is no hoax but is based on simple science.

Stricter measures are being enacted again, and it seems to be having an effect. The number of daily new cases is currently falling or flat in 33 of California's 58 counties, though still rising in 24 of them. My county is one in which the daily new cases is falling. I hope it stays that way!

Sadly true, and it is not much consolation that CA's population is more than twice that of NY. Yet, despite the daily new cases in CA leading the nation on some recent days, the curve for the last week or so has been flat. I would not be surprised if both Texas and Florida's totals both exceed even CA's total number of cases within the next month or two.

It also seems likely that Florida's Governor De Santis is trying to or would like to suppress reporting of the total number of new cases and hospitalizations in his state, in order to minimize damage to his image and credibility.
