English and European football has protocol in place for this. They stop the game and give a warning. Next warning is that the have the players exit the pitch. And if it continues, the game is called.

It still happens, and it's still a problem. But fortunately, home fans will turn on the asshole making the comments and get him kicked out.

I understand that BYU was not prepared for this. What more could you expect from a church and university that claims prophetic guidance but seems always to be behind and reactionary. I mean, you'd think that institutions with such a racist past who are trying to make things up (without apologizing, of course) might receive some divine guidance on how to do that.

What concerns me most is that no fan seems to have said anything. If this had happened at a Dodger game, the "fan" would have been lucky to only have been immediately kicked out. I guess he knew his audience.

They should’ve stopped the game right then and there. Period. Just stop playing for a goddamn minute, identify the perp, escort him out, and then charge him with making a threat or whatever. Where are the adults at BYU?

This. Stop the game until the idiot is kicked out. And where were the fans sitting in front of him who had to have heard?

And only banned from BYU hosted athletic events? What about BYU campus? Will K&M send him a letter banning him from all LDS properties -- I've seen such letters for less. If he has a temple recommend, will that be revoked? (I got mine revoked for not paying tithing, apparently a much greater sin.)

In a pair of statements, BYU Athletics apologized for the incident and said the fan had been banned from all campus athletic venues.

"We will not tolerate behavior of this kind. Specifically, the use of a racial slur at any of our athletic events is absolutely unacceptable and BYU Athletics holds a zero-tolerance approach to this behavior," the school said.
except that BYU DID "tolerate behavior of this kind."

"BYU Athletics holds a zero-tolerance approach to this behavior."

except that they DON'T.

BYU Athletics allowed this behavior to continue throughout an event, even after they were notified, and even after they put a police officer at the Duke bench.
In her statement Sunday, Rachel Richardson said BYU officials "were made aware of the incident during the game, but failed to take the necessary steps to stop the unacceptable behavior and create a safe environment."

Before BYU joins the Big 12, the league must give the school a reality check on its racism problem. Located in the scenic town of Provo, Utah, BYU has always had a reputation in college sports as a little too right of right. Provo is to conservatism as Portland is to liberalism. Provo can be a time warp to 1955-era repression. Before the Cougars join the Big 12 in 2023, Yormark needs to have a sit down with all of the suits at BYU and set realistic expectations.

I saw some apologetic BYU sports fan in Arizona trying to get to the bottom of this cause it "doesn't reflect the school he attended." He had sources at BYU that claimed the banned fan was someone else potentially and had mental disabilities and it was them coming and making threats after the game, so that is why nothing happened during the game. The racial slurs during the game were possibly other people/another person. He also was relying a lot on "no one else is saying they heard this." I'm certain if I was too cowardly to act that I would definitely go on to social media to let people know that I heard the slurs but was uncomfortable to do anything about it.

He would later bring up how there were multiple versions of the story floating in different spheres from people with no first hand knowledge, without any sense of irony that he was also speculating and muddying the discussion without any first hand knowledge.

Sounds like quite a few BYU fans in attendance claim there were no racist slurs. Let’s see: loud indoor arena, most fans sitting behind the offender. Sounds like “absence of evidence” fallacy in search of comfort and an “other” villain.

BYU issued an apology.
Banned a fan from all BYU venues.
Got a guard to sit by the Duke bench.

That’s not evidence of this being real?
Geez.

As previously reported, Black volleyball players from Duke University were taunted with racial slurs by a fan on Friday during a game at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. It was bad enough that the white BYU fan was allowed to continue shouting the N-word and berating players throughout the game without being ejected. It was bad enough that BYU officials waited until after the incident went viral to put out their little weak, standardized statement addressing the incident saying they “will not tolerate behavior of this kind” when they literally tolerated it for the duration of the game.

All of that was bad enough, but BYU Athletic Director Tom Holmoe decided to add a little more insult to injury by dancing around the word “racism” like it was a pit full of hot coals while addressing the incident before Sunday night’s game.

“At last night’s game, there were some egregious and hurtful slurs that were directed at members of the Duke University women’s volleyball team,” Holmoe said. “I’m the athletic director and I’m accountable for what happens at all our events. And with that in mind, the process to get better and heal has already begun as you can see and you’ll see a little bit more often.”

Bro, what are you even talking about? How are you claiming a healing process has started and saying definitively that “you can see” that process when you’re still being ambiguous AF in identifying who is healing and what they’re healing from? But whatever, carry on…

“This morning I visited with the young athlete on Duke’s team and her coach,” Holmoe continued referring to Duke starter Rachael Richardson, who was the main target of the Klan-ish fan’s racial attacks. “If you would have met her, you would have loved her. But you don’t know her and so you don’t feel that way.”

Bruh—just stop.

First of all, who are you even talking to? The RACIST man who committed acts of RACISM during the game was banned from all BYU events, so he’s certainly not in the audience you’re speaking in front of. Secondly—and I’m just going to tap the mic and raise my voice for this part—IT DOES NOT MATTER WHETHER THE BLACK VICTIM OF RACISM IS LIKABLE OR NOT!! I’m sure Richardson is a lovely woman, But Black people shouldn’t have to be perfectly composed and likable by white standards for our humanity to be recognized. Also, no, this racist fan would not “have loved her” regardless because she’s Black and—*taps mic again*—HE’S RACIST!!

Obviously, Holmoe’s seemingly intentionally non-specific address didn’t go over well with Black folks on Twitter who know useless lip service when they hear it.

The point is, if you’re going to address racism then address it by its name. Otherwise, you’re just playing around in Black people’s faces, which, as far as many of us are concerned, is racist in and of itself.

in contrast:
From @DukeU President Price,

“I am outraged by the racist slurs and taunts directed at members of our volleyball team at @BYU this weekend. Duke is fully committed to providing a safe, inclusive environment for competition, and we will not tolerate any racism or harassment.”

I can't find a full transcript, but here's a clip from ESPN's FIRST TAKE on the incident: YouTube Clip Link
Stephen Smith wrote: In a gym, everybody hears what is being said. If you’re back there serving and they’re yelling racial slurs everybody in that gym should’ve heard something and they should have stopped the game and did something immediately...

I’m saying, ‘BYU, you did it, by allowing this to happen and not addressing it expeditiously, not addressing it with the level of quickness and speed that you should have addressed it with. So now instead of looking at that fool, that racist bastard, that was spewing that nonsense towards Ms. Rachel Richardson, instead of looking at that person, now we’re looking at the university all because of a dereliction of duty that you put forth because you (BYU) couldn’t find it in yourself to address it immediately.
