We’ve had enough outright bs claims of this or that injustice being perpetrated by a white person against a minority that turns out to be false that I think, as things don’t add up as presented, warrants skepticism. I’m not gonna lie, because of my pre-existing prejudices against BYU, Mormonism, Mormons in general, and the ‘Utah Bubble’ I accepted the account at face value. This kind of thing causes so much outrage and paranoia that I believe making up a false story should result in some sort of misdemeanor at least.

Whatever the case may be, I’m inclined to believe her because I’ve seen way too many Confederate battle flags here in Utah to know there’s definitely a racial thing going strong and it’s out in the open.

And of course you hope #2 isn’t true or overblown. I got a house just down the street flying the CBF, houses sprinkled throughout my community with the CBF, houses sprinkled throughout my community with the Take No Quarter flag, and various trucks around town with Stars n’ Bars stickers on their back window. This kind of thing runs deep out here. I suppose it’s possible that it’s worse. I’m not a fan of criminalizing speech, especially given what we know about the inaccuracy of human perception and recollection. Piled on top of that is a big game of telephone, with the media as the loudest speaker.

I think there’s a whole lot of real estate between accurately stating facts and “making up a false story.” And I’m perfectly happy not to latch onto either extreme position.
