Daniel seems to find Dowsing and NDE's persuasive, but the plethora of child abuse cases that have come to light across recent decades amount, in his eyes, to "little or no actual evidence". How many examples of abuse does he need for it to reach the same level of credibility as Dowsing? There are more than 11 witnesses to the fact that the Church has a long standing systemic child abuse problem, facilitated in part by the Church's lack of risk management at a local level and a central risk management system that seems solely to be designed to hide the problem. And in so doing the Church protects the perpetrators with an added consequence that members are manipulated into being complacent to the danger within. The LDS church has a serious "bishop problem". It stems from the blind obedience LDS top eschelon cultivates in members, including those who are parents. Given the business and administrative backgrounds and vaunted expertise of the Big 15--let alone supposed revelation-channel (ordained as "apostles") with an all-knowing--why haven't they figured out and fixed the bishop problem?

REM, Utah (KUTV) — A former bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been arrested as part of an ongoing sex abuse investigation involving multiple victims over the course of several decades.

Carl Johnson, 77, was arrested in Orem on Wednesday and booked into the Davis County Jail on seven counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child.

Detectives say Johnson abused children as young as 2 years old and held numerous positions of trust in the Church, including as a bishop. Johnson also served as Mayor of West Bountiful City in the 90s.

“In all these cases, the victims were told not to tell anyone else about what happened to them. In some cases, these crimes were suppressed in one way or another by Johnson when any disclosures were made. Johnson used his position of trust to influence any disclosures,” a police affidavit says.

The Davis County Sheriff’s Office estimates there are at least six victims and more cases currently under investigation.

The police report released publicly on Thursday details abuse against three victims between 1985 and 1996. The victims each described sexual abuse by Johnson on different occasions in Davis County. During an interview with detectives, Johnson admitted to the allegations of abuse by the three victims, according to police.

“Johnson has showed a long history of sexual abuse of children, some as young as 2 years old. Johnson admitted he has a problem of controlling his sexual urges and has struggled with this problem most of his life,” a detective wrote in the affidavit.

Johnson is currently being held in the Davis County Jail without bail.

one of the things we learned in the Catholic "protect god's children" course was that predators will seek out places where there are fewer safeguards in place. Safeguards such as background checks, fingerprinting, preventive policies, etc. The Mormon church must be such a target.

That's my understanding as well. The claim by the church's lawyers that background checks would not have turned up anything ignores the deterrent effect of having protective procedures in place. That's why abuse cases so often involve trusted friends or family members. No background check.

Has the Church issued a rebuke to this news article yet? Possibly they could claim that the Lord issued strict instructions to Kirton McConkie on how to deal with these sexual abuse cases.

The rules of the Kirton McConkie Defense Club shall be:

1. Don't blab so the abuse can continue.
2. Defend the abuser.

The victims told investigators they were told not to tell anyone, and Johnson used his position to suppress disclosures, according to the probable cause statement.

The Church will probably issue a strong statement condemning this British newspaper for publishing the story and Smac at the Mormon D&D will write a line-by-line rebuttal proving the victims were wanton hussies who lured the bishop into temptation and that the Church was totally justified in telling those hussies not to blab.
