IHAQ, why do you think that I have a relatively high opinion of myself?

IHAQ, how did you come to the conclusion that respect for people who are not Latter-day Saints requires Latter-day Saints to leave them alone?IHAQ wrote: ↑Mon Sep 12, 2022 11:59 amThe point about showing respect for people who aren't Mormon's is an interesting one, in that the entire missionary premise of proactively preaching to others, the content of the the 'preach my gospel' manual, is geared towards not respecting people who aren't Mormons enough to leave them alone.

Malkie, do you have biases against all members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and its doctrines/practices?

Read the interaction from which you've cherry picked my quote, the answer to your question lies there.KevinSim wrote: ↑Wed Sep 14, 2022 2:33 amIHAQ, how did you come to the conclusion that respect for people who are not Latter-day Saints requires Latter-day Saints to leave them alone?IHAQ wrote: ↑Mon Sep 12, 2022 11:59 amThe point about showing respect for people who aren't Mormon's is an interesting one, in that the entire missionary premise of proactively preaching to others, the content of the the 'preach my gospel' manual, is geared towards not respecting people who aren't Mormons enough to leave them alone.

I think this one's mostly just a funny video.
If I put my believing Mormon hat back on for a moment my answer is probably something along the lines of: "Everyone should have an opportunity to hear the gospel, understanding that sometimes when we engage folks it is for our own growth and not just theirs. That said, hopefully these young men were carrying the Spirit with them as they were out and followed the promptings there of. I don't have enough information to decide if they made a 'bad' call here and I don't envy any missionary and the choices they have to deal with daily."
And my non-Mormon hat: Most of the missionaries I knew were fairly conflict averse and I'm not surprised to see them react the way they did. At this point my understanding is tracting is an activity only engaged in when there is literally nothing else to do and I can see them not wanting to spend what little tracting time they have with someone that advertises that they likely aren't open to the message. We should be careful about beating these young lads up over this while also being annoyed when our personal space is invaded by solicitors of any variety.

"... all members ..." - absolutely not. Many members of my family are Mormons, and I am not biased against them. I have a lot of respect for many of the non-family Mormons I know. And I have no reason for bias against the vast majority of Mormons that I do not know.
I dislike some doctrines/practices of the LDS church, and would be happy if they were abandoned or changed. If that counts as being biased against them, ... meh! It would be the same as saying that people in general are biased against things they don't like - a total non issue, I believe.
