You don't need to refer to the meaningless threats from a guy that clearly was guessing and perhaps was in the early stages of Alzheimer's. Obviously it won't convince anyone here to return. Perhaps take another tact? You'll go further with a little sugar instead of invective.

President Benson was simply calling a spade a spade. The Book of Mormon is the keystone of testimony. The talk I linked to was an all time classic in regards to the Book of Mormon’s importance.Dr Exiled wrote: ↑Thu Sep 15, 2022 8:34 pmYou don't need to refer to the meaningless threats from a guy that clearly was guessing and perhaps was in the early stages of Alzheimer's. If that’s the position you’re going to take that will be the conclusion that you make.honorentheos wrote: ↑Thu Sep 15, 2022 9:50 pmWhich makes the fact it is a product of the 19th century devastating to the restoration claims.

I believe that these words about The Book of Mormon are words from the same fellow who wrote the forward to this book, aren't they, MG?

Yes they are. I read that forward in its entirety. Have you?
What were your thoughts?
By the way, the words spoken in the forward of this book have very little, if anything, to do with the title. Somehow the author got permission to use an address Ezra Benson had given to a joint meeting consisting of the Rotary Club and other groups called “Trade and Treason”.
I am hard pressed to disagree much with the words he delivered that were later used as a forward to the book you posted.
Read it, see if you agree or disagree. President Benson was an ardent anti communist. That is the thrust of his words in this forward.
He may have had some concerns with the original players in the civil rights movement, granted, but that isn’t the theme, at all, in this forward which Benson gave permission to use in this book.
He had strong political beliefs. The fact that he was vehemently opposed to communism and its adherents, even on American soil, doesn’t mean that his words in regards to the Book of Mormon ought not to be taken seriously.
You seem to be making him out to be some sort of a buffoon. A buffoon he was not.
Probably much more accomplished and respected than any one of us.
Non believers, of course, are going to find reasons and rationale to not take the words of the prophets seriously. This has ALWAYS been the case.

Yes, I have. A copy of the book is here:

Maybe not, but his words have a lot to do with the content of the book. The authors didn't 'somehow' get permission. Benson endorsed the book.MG 2.0 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 12:16 amBy the way, the words spoken in the forward of this book have very little, if anything, to do with the title. At the time, the John Birch Society was talking of pushing for an Ezra Taft Benson Presidential nomination with Strom Thurmond as his VP. This was part of Benson's coy flirtation with the segregationists he'd need to back him.
You're full of surprises.
The theme of the book is a quite a bit stronger than that. Benson knew what it contained. As I said, he endorsed the book.MG 2.0 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 12:16 amRead it, see if you agree or disagree. President Benson was an ardent anti communist. That is the thrust of his words in this forward.

Absolutely.
As you do, as a nonbeliever in Islam. It will, as you say, always be the case.
Edited for snark. Apologies.

Here is a conference speech where Benson equates the civil rights movement with communism, fearmongering the members:
https://sites.google.com/site/heavenlybanner/crtool
Seems like any upheaval of the social order is branded as some sort of bogeyman, this time using the communist scare as a tool. Benson was flat wrong here. I wonder where else he was wrong?

Obligatory bad joke: you know who else had strong political beliefs and opposed communism but whose opinions you should take seriously?
