One fewer ward nearly 20 years later?? That's way worse than even I thought.
I believe the good sir Wang Chung is incorrect. There were 26,000 wards and branches for the church in 2002:

Not 31,000.

Can someone here show me this is anything but dismal news for the Church's future?

31223 wards & branches as of January 1st, 2022
31224 wards & branches as of October 1st, 2002
increase of 1 (.003% increase)

4009 stakes & districts as of January 1st, 2022
4020 stakes & districts as of October 1st, 2022
increase of 11 (.2% increase)

Everybody Wang Chung may want to weigh in, but i think the confusion here is the single "02" in his third line.

Looking at the reference he gave, the raw data underlying that page only goes back to 2010. considering that one "02" was as typo, i looked at the data from jan 1, 2022 to oct 1, 2022, and pulled out this:
2022-10-01 [3514 + 507] [24278 + 6951]
summing the brackets, we get:
4021 stakes and districts; 31229 wards and branches
2022-01-01 [3498 + 511] [24252 + 6971]
again summing the brackets:

4009 stakes and districts; 31223 wards and branches

I think this is closer to the comparison Everybody Wang Chung intended.

At least MG 2.0 admitted that his ward was shrinking.
Our stake just recently added two more wards to the stake because of growth in our area. All of the buildings are running on multiple ward schedules to meet the needs of members every Sunday.

Where did I say our ward was shrinking?

Makes sense, simple typo, happens to the best of us. Not much to coo about over the course of a year.

What’s the active ward size for the wards, would you estimate?

So, are you ready to proclaim "that His gospel shall be as the stone cut out of the mountain without hands which would roll forth and fill the whole earth ...?" Or is it too early to be exulting in numbers? Your ward/stake along the wasatch front may have some momentary growth, but the trends are against the church growing like it did or even having any growth. Religion isn't that popular. Perhaps if we have the world war that seems to be brewing will religion make a comeback. However, the trends are against it.
Myth is misused by the powerful to subjugate the masses all too often.

I'm slightly confused. It used to be the pace of growth that showed the Church was true, now it's diminishing numbers that proves it. This sounds a lot like a double headed coin toss...
