Registered sex offender films child in Church bathroom

We have decided as a society that sex offenders cannot be within a certain distance of a school. We've also decided that organizations like the LDS church have the ability to exclude anyone they wish from entering buildings. The church did this until 1978 with black people being banned from entering their temples.

It would be trivial for the church to spend a little money doing cursory checks of free public databases of sex offenders on the ward records. And exclude those people from being at the ward buildings. And yet they're more worried about making sure members don't steal tithing money...

How does a Church enforce a law to keep sex offenders away from Church services if the offender is randomly visiting a Church? Did we know if this guy was a member of the ward or was visiting?

If he was just visiting then obviously they wouldn’t have time to do a check. I think it’s reasonable to do a check on all members of record for each ward.

I think they need to let everyone know if someone is on the sex offender registry. When I was attending, the word came out to members with kids about some other member that had been convicted of pedophilia so as we could be watchful. The registries are there for a reason. We were also advised to take our kids to the bathroom ourselves when they needed to go. I was periodically called out of meetings to do so. Unfortunately these precautions need to be instituted and they aren't that tough to follow.

I guess my question exists because we don't know if anyone in this ward knew this guy. Someone shows up to Church. No one knows him. Do they need to run a background on him to see if he comes up on the registry? Should we really take our 14 year olds to the bathroom in case the new guy who showed randomly is after our kids?

I don't know the details of this incident other than what's posted here, so maybe they knew him and someone knew he was on the registry. I could be wrong, but this seems far more difficult an issue then sometimes we like to say.

I think there needs to be polite questioning of visitors in a welcoming way but questioning nonetheless. I remember when I first appeared on MDD, Calm and a couple of others questioned me to find out what I was about. I didn't see anything wrong with that and still don't. Sure, there may be some weirdos that get around the defenses, but, it should be treated as any other activity where everyone should be vigilant for potential predators. When my son was playing little league, we had to accompany our children to the bathroom because there was some incident that had occurred. It wasn't that big of a deal but needed to be done.

The meetinghouse is located at 2535 Newcastle Drive in Sandy. The sex offender registry provides an address for the offender. I suppose one could use the LDS meetinghouse locator website to find the ward associated with the offender's address. Does that ward meet at 2535 Newcastle Drive in Sandy?

His family is LDS. I think it's reasonable to assume he wasn't a random never-Mo in Sandy who just happened to stumble into a ward one Sunday.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 7 at 2 p.m. in the Murray Park Ward Chapel (8 minute drive from Sandy), 495 East 5600 South. Friends may call Wednesday, 6-8 p.m. at Jenkins Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State, and Thursday, 12:45-1:45 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment, Murray City Cemetery.

Suzanne Nielsen Cornelius passed away on March 27, 2016, in Salt Lake City, UT. She was born in Gunnison, UT, May 24, 1949, to Margaret Lowry and Raymond L. Nielsen. Her husband, children, and grandchildren were the joy of her life. Suzanne was an active member of the LDS church and served in many positions during her life. Dale and Suzanne served a full time mission in Mitchell, SD.

She is survived by: her husband, James Dale Cornelius; her five children: Ron Jentzsch (Raquel), Douglas Jentzsch (Melissa), Kim Palmer (Kurt), Sandra Beck (Spencer), and Zachary Wallin; her sister, LaRae Hatch; and her brother Douglas Nielsen.

She is preceded in death by: her parents; her sister Gorgena Nielsen Curtis; and her brother, Kenneth Ray Nielsen.

LOGAN — A 25-year-old Logan man has been sentenced to jail and therapy for downloading child pornography.

Zachary Wallin appeared in 1st District Court Monday morning. In November he accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a child, a second-degree felony. As part of the agreement, state prosecutors dropped nine remaining charges.

Wallin was arrested after more than 1,100 images of child pornography was found on his personal computer. Logan City Police seized the computer while conducting a search warrant, after agents with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC) tracked the porn to Wallin’s computer IP address.

During Monday’s sentencing, state attorney Barbara Lachmar said investigators believed Wallin may have also tried to access additional images on a Utah State University computer, where he was employed. They later decided not to pursue more charges after Wallin cooperated with investigators and agreed to get counseling help.

Wallin’s defense attorney, Wayne Caldwell told the court his client was someone with great potential aside from his pornography addiction.

Judge Thomas Willmore told Wallin, what makes child pornography so bad is that the children who are victims cannot be rescued. He sentenced him to 210-days in jail with work release. He also ordered him to complete sex offender therapy and have no contact with children.

Lachmar said Wallin’s case points out how addictive child pornography is in our society.

As mentioned in the other thread the “church” flags their records and has a database of Mormon sex offenders. Whether or not that information was passed to the pederast’s Bishop is, naturally, unknown.
