DCP has profited enormously from the relationship between Interpreter and Cruise Lady. So maybe not “dine lavishly,” but definitely “travel lavishly.”

And you are right that they’ve thrown away hundreds of thousands of dollars on that ridiculous Skousen project.

I’m pretty sure this is one of the longest posts DCP has made on his blog in a very long time. Certainly very long for someone who is self styled as “reluctant to ask for money.”

As you can see here, our regular expenditures currently run on the order of roughly $120,000 per annum.) And we need additional funds to do special projects. (Most notable and by far the most financially demanding among planned future projects is our Six Days in August movie effort, on which we hope to begin filming this coming spring or summer.)

The Relief Society Sister in Parowan advises me that the Interpreter Foundation reported spending the following in recent years:

2018: $173,008.57
2019: $170,591.60
2020: $131,394.04
2021: $166,942.63

Expenses through the third quarter of 2022 are $88,150.72, so the Foundation may be cutting back.

I must confess that I am somewhat surprised that the Foundation hopes to begin filming Six Days in August "this coming spring or summer." (Perhaps Witnesses footage left on the cutting room floor can be repurposed.) Who's the director? Who's handling the sound effects for the fight scenes? Has the casting call gone out? Has BYU Religious Education contracted for rights to include Six Days in August in their curricula?

Why would anyone be motivated to donate to Interpreter? It is a garbage-in, garbage-out waste of time and energy. It does precisely nothing good in the world. It exists as a forum for a few people to engage in mutual mental masturbation.

There are real charities out there, offering substantive relief for suffering. Direct Smile donations to one of them.

It might be a real charity if you had lots of different people with different perspectives posting articles in the journal.

But as it is, it’s just Dan and a bunch of buddies goofing around and patting each other on the back. A really strange charity, and even stranger academic journal.

Unfortunately our tax laws allow pretty much any group of people to call themselves a charity.

Incidentally, my Malevolent Stalker, who has volunteered his own labor over the past fifteen years or more to the noble cause of anonymously defaming me online, refuses to allow that I myself might be as selflessly public-spirited as he and, thus, capable of volunteering time and effort without any personal financial benefit. In response to the fundraiser mentioned immediately above, he insists that I’ve profited (enormously, he often suggests) from my connections with both the Interpreter Foundation and the Cruise Lady company (now Bountiful Travel). In fact, the connection between the two is relatively recent and only occasional — my most recent tours to Israel and Egypt, for example, had nothing at all to do with the Interpreter Foundation — and I’ve profited from neither of them. I expect that he knows this. But his behavior reminds me of a statement often attributed to Sir Winston Churchill: Occasionally he stumbles over the truth, but he always picks himself up and hurries on as if nothing has happened.
