Voting in Maricopa County, AZ

I'm wondering if this is just a local story since I haven't heard much about it beyond local news, but Arizona Republican County supervisors in Cochise County voted to not certify their county's election results - even though Republican candidates overwhelming won there. Governor-elect Katie Hobbs, as our current Secretary of State, has filed suit to force them to certify their results by December 8th. It's worth keeping in mind that she is sueing a county that voted overwhelmingly against her so the votes for her opponent will be counted. It could have the effect of costing the Republicans a House seat.

I'm very hopeful that they will force the certification of the votes in the end. #1 I don't like seeing anyone disenfranchised, even if I disagree with their vote choices. #2, and possibly more important, this feels like a play for "normalizing" being able to not certify in 2024 if they don't like the outcome of that election, potentially denying the rightful winner that state's electors.

Me too! It's quite instructive and commendable that Cathy Hobbs also urges Cochise County supervisors to certify their election results, even though she knows the majority of voters there voted for her opponent and the Republican Congressional candidate. She is obviously more honest and fair-minded than Cari Lake, and cares more about democracy.

Agreed. Your second point is related to my own suspicion here. Out-of-state groups had pressured county supervisors around the state to do this, but only Cochise County did so. I figured the move was to stall the official certification of the results while Lake pursued her building case to challenge the results. But it also makes sense that this could be seen as a long play and, as Gad suggests, a choice to sacrifice a House seat now in order to be positioned to challenge the results of the Presidential election in 2024.

Scratch that. I think the GOP is just going to roll with their strategy and always claim malfeasance. Perhaps if they keep losing elections they’ll drop this shtick, but I think we’re stuck with this nonsense for another decade or so.
