Singapore: A Case Study

President Nelson announced in the April 2021 General Conference that a temple will be built in Singapore.

Let's take a brief look at how the Church is doing in Singapore. In 2018 there were 10 Wards, 1 Branch and 1 mission. In 2022 there were 6 Wards, 0 Branches and 1 mission.

In the four years since 2018, the Church in Singapore has lost over 40% of its units (4 Wards and 1 Branch). Membership has also declined every year since 2018, despite having a Singapore Mission with almost 200 full-time missionaries.

In my experience, the activity rate in Asia is typically 7-10%. If we assume an activity rate of 10% for Singapore, that would mean there are currently around 340 active members. In a typical Ward, you can assume 25 -30% are temple recommend holders. That means if the temple were built today, there would be approximately 87 members that would hold temple recommends. If projections continue, there will be no Wards or Branches left in Singapore by 2028. But on the bright side, at least there will be a beautiful (empty) temple.

But on the bright side, at least there will be a beautiful (empty) temple.

The Church should build it so it could be converted into a mansion with little cost of retrofitting. That would mean including bubble jets into the baptismal font and the realtors plugging how everyone in Europe and the United States values hot tubs on oxen pedestals.
