And a final thought, they are surveying people who show up. Not those who have left, not those who no longer consider themselves Mormon. So they're going to get a skewed set of results. Why don't the Apostles host surgeries with disaffected members, rather than devotionals with manipulated soft ball questions from wide eyed compliant young people? I'm sure they would learn far more about what is happening to activity from a private hour with a disaffected member. But no, they know what the issues are. They simple want to preach to the choir and have the choir send survey results back them, rather than dealing with the actual systemic issues that are driving people away.

If you are at least showing up, even if you are not devoted to the church, then perhaps you can still be rescued - unlike the non-attenders, who are effectively written off.
Perhaps the survey is to allow the GAs to estimate the proportion of those still attending who can and will do the work of rescuing the rest.

I'm kind of gobsmacked that a church would be asking about political affiliation. The absence of any sort of inquiry about whether the member feels the church is meeting their spiritual needs and how the church could do that better is also pretty striking. I'm not sure if "pastoral care" is the right term, but in other congregations I'm familiar with, there is a concept of supporting the needs of the membership that seems absent.

If I were TBM and the church presented me this question, it would plant a seed in my mind that maybe I ought not to be active any longer, from this day forward. The question suggests that activity doesn't have good longevity.

I think it’s probably about myth building, but they need to know what direction to take the narrative. I’m kind of in the camp that what holds us humans together is a sort agreed-upon lies we tell each other, whether it’s religion, or ethnic identity, or money, all of it is borne out of a collective consciousness to derive value out of a shared experience. Since it appears politics is superseding religion as the new identity-mythos the lds church is trying to figure out how to sell a new meta-narrative that’ll bind the remaining believers to its community. And since they’re a corporation, the process is as inspired as WalMart conducting market research. The church never cared about the members; it just cared about its own survival and profitability.
