Merry Smithmas!

Post by Kishkumen »

Some treat it as a joke or an embarrassment. I say why not one more holiday to add to the season?

Thanks, Kishkumen. It’s nice to be reminded of the reason for the season.

The truth, of course, is that most Latter-day Saints know that 23 December is the Prophet’s birthday, and many celebrate it.

From the Church News from a few years ago:
SOUTH ROYALTON, Vt. — About 75 members of the South Royalton Ward, Montpelier Vermont Stake of the Church, celebrated the Prophet Joseph Smith's 196th birthday Dec. 23 with a party, including sandwiches, birthday cake and the singing of hymns at his birthplace.

Sister Starley Smith, a service missionary at the memorial, led the group in singing "We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet" and "God Bless America."

The custom of having a Joseph Smith Birthday party at his birthplace began December 23, 1986, which would have been the Prophet's 181st birthday. Since that time the commemoration has continued annually.
Truly, we have witnessed the fulfillment of President Hinckley’s prophecy: “His birthday will grow in recognition and in importance as the years pass and the Church continues to grow."

As Elder Christofferson said a few years ago of Joseph while visiting his birthplace: “What’s typical, to me, of the way the Lord seems to do things—out of very humble circumstances, in this spot, . . . there is born a babe who will change the course of history.”

Merry Smithmas to you and yours!

And thou shalt create a new holiday to bless the future generations until I come again prancing in the forests. It shall be called Smithmas and shall be reverenced by those who call themselves saints in the last days.

.
For our celebration dinner, we made a bust of Joseph Smith out of milk jello, to be served ahead of the meat.

Can we make that a federal holiday? Say maybe March, April, or August.

Tonight, we shall enjoy birthday cake and sing “O Give Me Back My Prophet Dear!” with gusto.
