John Dehlin wasn't a real Mormon

More and more I hate the damned LDS Church.

I don't follow Dehlin, and I definitely haven't followed these accusations. But cloud of controversies of this type certainly surrounds him. I'm aware of it because I see it mentioned among anti-Mormons. Some defend him; some don't.

May it be sooner rather than later. I wish for him a healthy and obscure retirement.

Now we get to the real purpose of the last couple blog posts. It’s the 10 year anniversary of John Dehlin causing the ouster at the Maxwell Institute.

And he just can’t let it go. It’s become the defining event of his life, and why he is obsessed with making Interpreter more successful than MI. I sure hope plenty of obituaries mention his work at the MI and his embarrassing dismissal.

I thought “Book of Mormon” was fun and endearing. The Stone-Parker duo make fun of Mormon beliefs while depicting Mormons as decent, upbeat people. They are much kinder to faithful LDS than DCP is to ex-LDS.

Back in March and April of 2016, various media outlets cited Mr. John Dehlin, who was at the time still a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as expressing his giddy excitement about the new Broadway musical comedy The Book of Mormon:

I thought Mr. Dehlin’s remark extremely silly. But I’m amused to see that, while one purported Latter-day Saint once tried to portray The Book of Mormon as a Latter-day Saint Fiddler on the Roof, some Jews are now supposedly hoping for a Jewish Book of Mormon.

Is this common within Mormonism now? To say that excommunicated Mormons must have not ever really believed in Mormonism? It seems pretty distasteful. And I've seen this particular angry online Mormon speak this way about many of his fellow Mormons - doubting their sincerity. I don't think I've ever come across Catholics disparaging fellow Catholics in this way, or Jews disparaging their fellow Jews.

I vaguely remember Dehlin as having been ex'd before 2016.

Funny how LD in the comments does not apply this same logic to Joseph Smith.

Dr. Peterson is defending his use of the phrase “purported Latter-day Saint” in reference to Dehlin. But Dehlin was baptized, served a mission, went through the temple, paid tithing, etc. I guess it’s sort of how like DCP is a “purported scholar.” He earned a PhD, finished a dissertation, secured employment at a university, and published articles. But he also plagiarized extensively, defended absurd and obviously untrue claims, oversaw and edited a frankly pseudoscholarly “journal,” and published smear articles masquerading as “scholarship.” Call it even, I guess?

Their hatred of Dehlin is emblematic of the reasons I am no longer part of their community. I love my LDS family and friends, but their leadership and their apologists leave a very bad taste in my mouth. Not the kind of people I would aspire to emulate or want to give ear to, not to mention make excuses for.
