I have no doubt he’s a nice guy face to face much of the time. It’s hard to be as big an a-hole to someone’s face, much easier for him to do it online.

There’s just way too many instances of him trolling and trying to ruin lives. He learned nothing from trying to ruin John Dehlin and failing spectacularly. And he still keeps trying it, to this very day.

Don’t you have a book you should be writing, Dan?

I have to admit that, out of all of the silliness at the Peterson Obsession Board, the notion that I'm a sadist who actually enjoys deliberately inflicting pain on people is the absolute weirdest. (At least one person there posted on that subject just a few minutes ago.)

Why does he find this “weird”? It’s manifestly true, with evidence sprinkled abundantly throughout both his career and his “hobbies”. He once admitted that he harvested quotes from RfM—I.e., from people whose lives had been turned upside down over what they discovered about the Church—in the hopes of publicly embarrassing them. And what about that ridiculous email he sent to Rollo Tomasi, where he vowed that Rollo would have to “suffer” due to valid criticism that Rollo was raising? And what about the many hit pieces he’s overseen? Frankly, the idea that he feels anything resembling Christian charity towards critics seems far more like the “weird” and unbelievable thing.

It’s a difficult and risky thing to do to put one’s self out there as a public face for a minority religious group. You have to figure that you will be the target of a lot of criticism and nastiness. Add to that the fact that attacking and doxxing others will only add to your unpopularity. I think that all of this is perfectly predictable, but it also pains me to see people indulge in nastiness toward someone else. I always regret it when I do it.

Doctor, I would extend that charity observation well beyond critics to people in general. Even those who seem in good graces will learn the harsh reality of the one-way street at some point.
