The Erotic Mormon Art Of Joseph Brickley

Post by Everybody Wang Chung »

Joseph Brickley is a Mormon artist who is very popular at Deseret Book. Brickley is well-known for having semi-nude men/boys in many of his paintings.

He also is well known on reddit for a painting which can only be described as "Erotic Jesus." It's a best seller at Deseret Book and there are literally thousands of homes along the Wasatch Front with this highly inappropriate painting in their family room:

(I have no idea what Jesus is doing in this painting, but I'll have what he is having)
Image

(Another famous Brickley painting. The good Samaritan is helping a completely body-waxed and muscular Jewish man.)
Image

(A ripped Nephi with smoldering, come-hither bedroom eyes)
Image

(A couple of handsome Elders playing marbles with some shirtless natives)
Image

(A nearly naked shepherd boy, inappropriately dressed for a cold night)
Image

(A body-waxed and hairless Jesus wearing a loose robe with clearly nothing underneath)
Image

(The only one wearing modest clothing in this painting is the woman)
Image

(Not sure what this is supposed to represent other than two nearly naked grown men, one who is clearly doing a ballet dance)

Sensual masculinity is a recurring theme in much Mormon pop art. As an additional example, think of Arnold Friberg's artwork that is still published in the stand-alone versions of the Book of Mormon. You know what I'm talking about...

Lehi, with that billionaire sugar daddy vibe, that manly beard, and that sweet eye-candy Sariah hanging on his arm.

Nephi dressed like Tarzan, that square jaw, those broad shoulders and oiled pectorals, and those well-defined biceps begging for erotic attention.

Abinidi, half-stripped and standing alone in chains, vulnerable, before the decadent court of King Noah, those priests gazing on him like lionesses eyeing a tender, aged steak.

Alma and his beautiful followers engaged in a wet T-shirt party disguised as a baptism.

Captain Moroni dressed in a leather kilt and standing above his troops, probably going commando underneath it, his sword scabbard hanging low like an ample, meaty phallus.

Mormon, mortally wounded but still still breathtakingly handsome, shirtless and toned, observing the aftermath of the battlefield chaos like an aging swinger observes the mess left over from the party the night before.

Oh, my holy God. Mormon art is lip-smacking.

isn’t a Jewish Jesus. Maybe Ubermensch Jesus, but not semitic Jesus. He’s talented, though. His sculpture work is excellent.

Whatever Joseph Brickey's sexuality, I hope he can be himself. If he is gay, it's got to be difficult knowing that a good chunk of his livelihood comes from artwork he does for Mormon temple interiors. And, knowing that the church was cancelling people before cancel culture was even a thing... Actors in church temple films would find themselves promptly cancelled and excised from the films if their later behavior or public opinions reflected poorly on the church. Perhaps artists who do painting and sculpture and who later leave the church aren't cancelled as ignominiously as film actors...

This is a first for me. (That's what he said! har har!)

He's a talented artist and if he's hung in the temple, I'd love to know if MG 2.0 has noticed and what he thinks.

Definitely advances my belief that as the Roman Empire persecuted Christians only to become Christian, the Mormon Church will be the gay religion of the 22nd century, if not sooner. I imagine that many of the brethren are secretly enjoying this and waiting in the wings for their time to blossom.

Surely I'm not the only person who, after viewing all this...art, read that wrong...

You have to stop now, Gad! For god's sake, I have family standing around. Have some mercy.

I think it is supposed to be reminiscent of the murder of Laban by Nephi. The high-leg spearing technique relates more to Brazilian capoeira than ballet, suggesting a connection to the Hebrew mamushka.
