I agree that it is a problem with humanity. People don't really want their core beliefs challenged and would rather the contrarian be silenced. Happens all the time. I'm beyond counting how many arguments I've been in where a client really, really wants their position to be true when it really, really isn't. Then the messenger gets blamed.

I tried to join an LDS-related message board recently, got in, made one post, and was immediately banned. Ah well...

Try using the name of a famous Mormon from history, such as Gilles de Rais.

I had to wiki Gilles de Rais. Because I had never heard of him. So, for the uninformed reader the joke goes like this:

A lot of Mormons have been revealed as of late to be child sexual predators.

Gilles de Rais fought alongside Joan of Arc, and was later revealed to be a child rapist and murderer. He probably raped and murdered scores of children, possibly numbering into the hundreds.

So, a “famous Mormon from history” would be any figure who raped and murdered children in a horrific fashion, because Mormons have child predators among the flock they protect from the legal system.

Some people close to him even said, and I paraphrase, that when he turns to Riess and Dehlin, they feel like he is turning away from them.

Definitely not a cult.

Dehlin and Mormon Stories has led a lot of people out of the church.

I think it was a good experiment worth trying. I wish the three of them had been able to make and distribute a larger number of podcasts as a modeling exercise if nothing else.

It looks as if someone at the church counseled Bro. Mason to not give the evil Dehlin and questionable Riess a platform where they could appear reasonable to the faithful. Questions need to be made in private to the Bishop, after prayer and fasting, and the questioner should be prepared for a righteous rebuke if the question is forbidden or the tone isn't correct.

Mason's Twitter thread seems to be:

• I wanted to be a peacemaker, to follow President Nelson's advice
• To do that I decided to engage in peaceful dialogue with people with whom I disagree
• Mormon friends and family said talking with Dehlin and Riess was abandoning them (the faithful Mormon friends and family)
• So Mason decided to be a peacemaker by leaving the show so that his Mormon friends and family would not feel abandoned

So I guess for active Mormons (and maybe President Nelson himself), being a peacemaker means:

• Stick with the tribe
• Use the tribe's preferred language
• Don't discuss things the tribe finds troublesome
• Don't hang out with people the tribe doesn't like

Except of course that's what all of humanity has done to "keep the peace" since basically forever. I don't think Jesus would have said, "Blessed are the peacemakers" if that's what he meant, he could have just said, "Keep doing what you are doing."

If I had to guess, this stems from Mormon used to talking at people, and not talking with people. Talking with people invites disagreements, contention, and possibly doubts. All of which, of course, is Satanic, so we can’t have that.

My guess is that the request came for someone high up enough in the Church hierarchy that they could not be refused, although I would like to think Patrick held out for some boon like the promise of 72 wives in the Celestial Kingdom.
