MAGA Evangelicals now rejecting Jesus

Post by Moksha »

MAGA Evangelicals are now rejecting the weak "liberal" teachings of Jesus and are now insisting on the full stormtrooper armor of God.

Will Mormons follow suit?

Jordan Peterson is already trying to redefine what "meek" means in the New Testament. Apparently, Jordan Peterson thinks that Jesus wanted everyone to become "monsters" and then spend the rest of their lives trying to control their inner monster. I kid you not:

Love to see Dan smack J. Peterson down on this topic. Well done, Dan! You are an excellent scholar.

To be completely fair to the evanjellyfish, that article relies almost entirely on anecdotes from Russell Moore, a guy who some would say deny Jesus' more harsh teachings. So it feels more like mud slinging on his part.

from the link:
Russell Moore, former top official for the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) who is now the editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, said during an interview aired on NPR's All Things Considered this week that Christianity is in a "crisis" due to the current state of right-wing politics.
Fairness might also note that neither Southern Baptist Convention nor Christianity Today are liberal organizations but on the far right there are sure to be found some folks who think awful things about them.

It certainly is a weakness of the article that it is the observations of one person. I have read other people making similar observations. I wish it was mudslinging instead of a sinking ship.

I enjoyed Dan's comments. I do not doubt their accuracy. I am unsure if I wish to pursue hearing a fuller picture of what Peterson was saying. Dan made a linguistic interpretation of the words of the Beatitudes. Peterson was making an interpretation based upon a wider picture of Biblical thought. He was also being annoyingly hyperbolic. Peterson loves exaggerated rhetoric sometimes for communication but it is hard not to suspect sometimes just to attract a lot of attention.

After all I think it is correct Jesus was speaking of how we treat other and not recommending being weak thoughtless followers. But both Dan and Mr Peterson agree on that. the word monster confuses and sounds silly.

I agree. The word is gentle, which is not the same as weak. If J. Peterson has a problem with gentle, then too bad for him.

It might be a sinking ship and Moore isn't completely incorrect but his relationship with the SBC deteriorated because of politics and he wasn't completely innocent. Christianity always ends up on shaky ground when it ends up embroiled in secular politics.
