.... Evangelicals despise Mormon Jesus.
Just to register my feelings, I am offended by the slur against EVs. It may be true of some EV of course.
But they do. When Mitt Romney was running many central groups appeared on major networks explaining why Mormon doctrine is offensive. Maybe for a different thread but the reasons are apparent.

So the alternate hypothesis here is that the guy is an evangelical. Who is so angry at the sign that says “Mormon God has a body of flesh and bone” that he pulled over, engaged, swore, condemned them, and then tried to hit them with his car?

I agree the prayer isn’t traditional LDS. But if he is code switching to try and pander to evangelicals then he would try to pray like an evangelical.

Why would a non Mormon get so upset? Would a Mormon pull over and do the same thing for a sign saying Mary isn’t really the mother of God in front of a Catholic Church?
Drumdude, ?? why are you not upset about the picketers? I am EV and see them as a grotesque cartoon of EV chasing people away from faith. I would also be truly offended by people protesting stupidly in front of a Catholic church. I mean why make it appear Christians are normally nasty stupid and offensive.

I do not know if the fellow saying get out of the neighborhood is Mormon EV atheist or whatever. I find I sympathize with him but hope I have better controll and decline to take the action he did.
I am upset at Mormon missionaries that go around converting people to a false religion that takes 10% of their income even if they can't afford it. But I would never stop a Mormon missionary pair riding around on their bicycles to confront them.

Likewise, I would have no problem with someone voicing their negative opinions on a sign, or even using a bullhorn. That is what makes America, America.

If people are afraid to protest, and don't do so because they're in fear of a confrontation or violence, then our society is failing them.

Really busts right through that "Mormons are such nice people" trope.
Mormons are such nice people is a very true thing. You just need to encounter them in a less threatening environment. Even dancing bears can turn when their back is up against the wall or they are put on a conference dais and given a chance to talk about snatching salmon from a stream or gay people.

While that's true, Moksha, Mormonism encourages -- brainwashes -- members to feel threatened at the slightest of slight hints of questioning anything about their beliefs.

If a person can step back a little they can see that these sorts of antics are just ridiculous, the people performing them are broken, hurt people, and there is no reason to take offense to it.

Excellent point. A deep breath to focus the consciousness, a smile, and the proverbial platter of cookies would have represented the kind Mormon spirit in that video.

This is so true. I had five or six Baby-boomer friends. I grew up with in the 60s to late 70s. I never asked them to go to church and what means. When I was 12 a neighbor took me to priesthood meeting and brought me home. 2 hrs later we went to Sunday school and came home. later in the Afternoon we went to Sacramento and then came home. My Protestant and Catholic friends were done in an a little more than an hour, mine was all day.

I find I should reconsider my comment. The word slur is inappropriate, I apologize.

I was thinking of a couple of things. There is a variety of EV views and feelings. I doubt any would include liking Mormon distinctive doctrines. There are folks who really demonize Mormons. I think that goes beyond finding some doctrines offensive. I find some Mormon doctrines offensive. I might warn about overreaching Mormon claims of power and authority. I am deeply repelled by suggestions that demonize Mormons. In the video under discussion drumdude noted a sign saying Mormon God has a body. I do not find that observation offensive. It is a correct observation about what Mormons teach. I saw another sign which said "church of latter day snakes" I found that deeply offensive and caused me to sympathize with the person who told the sign holders to leave the neighborhood.(but that person should have exercised more self control)

I suppose "Mormon Jesus" is a phrase which might mean different things to different people. I find it emotionally repulsive because it comes too close for comfort to demonizing Mormons. I feel sure that as a Mormon I worshiped the Jesus found in the Bible. That is the same Jesus as other Christians are concerned with. There are some ideas about his preexistence that Mormons hold which conflict with Christian doctrine. It is nontrinitarian. I think it makes more sense to try and clarify apposed to demonizing folks who understand or think differently.

Apparently the LDS Mormon church has asked Google Maps to start showing their chapels with a Christian Cross symbol instead of the Angel Moroni symbol.

They’re doing this to increase visibility, and supposedly to help people looking for a Christian church find a Christian church.

But at what point does the distinction between traditional Christianity and Mormonism begin to matter? Is the Mormon idea that God is a human being enough? I think it is. The vast majority of people who believe in the JudeoChristian and Islamic God would find that belief disturbing and incompatible with their conception of God.

It might even be seen as a bait and switch to use the cross symbol and then only later after significant time and money is spent, they realize that it wasn’t a traditional Christian religion at all.

I'm cringing now, but as a missionary we used similar tactics (street board near churches, both small and mega). Mormons proselytizing good, non-members proselytizing bad.

The man proselytizing actually seems like a decent, nice man. It's unfortunate the Mormons are cursing him out and saying all sorts of derogatory things.
Maybe you used similar tactics. I did not. I hold no double standard on this and I never did. He may be decent in many ways, but that does not change the fact that he is making a nuisance of himself.

Some would have said the protesters who marched on the capitol for civil rights were a nuisance. I personally find all forms of nonviolent protest completely acceptable and admirable. Even the Westboro Baptist protesters. They had every right to be outside the graveyard of fallen soldiers. I and the rest of the country disagreed completely with them but thank God we have a country where they were allowed to voice their concerns.

We live very sheltered lives if someone holding a sign is a nuisance to society.
