According to Peterson, the entire film has been leaked online. From some unknown lands.

I, for one, am appalled that someone would actually go through the effort of stealing something that has no value to begin with.

No value to you, you mean.

I notice that, in contrast to Rotten Tomatoes, the film is sporting a 5.1/10 rating on IMDB. Also, Tom, would you happen to know what the revised budget for the film is/was? Initially, it was $1 million, but they tacked on that additional $125,000 in marketing costs, which would bring the total to $1.25 million. There may have been other expenditures on top of that as well. It seems to me that they're keeping the finances secret at this point in the hopes of staving off accusations that the movies is (or will be) a "box office flop."

Dr. Scratch,

Thanks. Interesting IMDB rating. The IMDB rating is much more accurate than the RottenTomatoes artifical ratings. If I was rating the film on IMDB I would give it a 4.2.

Any idea how much the film needs to make in order to break even? I'm guessing that after distribution/box office sharing fees are calculated, the film probably needs to bring in around 2 million before it can start making a profit.

I think that's a pretty good guess. Standard industry practice is that the budget and box office receipts get posted. Just google pretty much any movie ever, and it will give those dollar amounts. The more interesting question, to my mind, is *why* they haven't posted the budget. I think there are at least three possibilities, which I'll list here in order from least to most plausible:

1. Dr. Peterson is actually profiting from the movie somehow, and he is keeping the budget a secret in order to avoid revealing that he's actually engaged in priestcraft. I think it's unlikely that this is going on. While I do think that there is a sincere hope that the movie would rake in tons of dollars, I would imagine that that money would be funneled back into Mopologetics. But if it made tens of millions? If that were the case, you'd have to imagine that he would take a slice.

2. There is a fear of a "hostile takeover" by the Brethren, and so the budget is being kept under wraps so that the Church doesn't assume control of their movie-making venture. Given what happened with FARMS back in the 1990s, I think there is a very real fear of this happening.

3. They are afraid of getting made fun of by critics, being taunted over the film being a "box office failure," and so on. This is the most likely reason. So much of their motivation has to do with responding to critics, trying to score points, and bristling over being made fun of, etc.

Pretty close, Tom. It looks like the film brought in $13,037 yesterday. I guess the good news is that "Witnesses" has now pulled in roughly 1/3 of the box office of The Stray, which is another Purdie Distribution film about a stray dog who shows up one day.

I don't know the revised/final budget.

As Doctor Scratch has noted, the film pulled in a modest $13,037 on Thursday. That's the fourth-lowest daily gross and the lowest non-Sunday gross since the film's premiere.

Thursday

Gross: $13,037
Theaters: 67 [again, Box Office Mojo is reporting a higher number]
Avg. Per Theater: $195
Total: $551,834

On a separate note, considering the media were invited to opening night, there appears to be a void of film critic reviews of "Witnesses".
True. Does the Provo Daily Herald have a movie critic? How about the Deseret News? (I understand that The Church News fired its movie critic after he panned The Book of Mormon Movie, Volume 1: The Agony.) I wonder why Sean Means' review hasn't been posted to Rotten Tomatoes. Has the distributor lobbied for it to be added?
I take it that the distributor ran with my suggestion: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=989
