Re: Peterson advocates for bombing Gaza, even if it means civilian casualties

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement on Middle East violence, which was published Thursday, Oct. 12, on ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

The statement reads: “We are devastated by the recent eruption of violence and loss of life in the Middle East. Violence of this nature is abhorrent to us and is not in harmony with the gospel of Jesus Christ, which is a gospel of peace. At such times, our hearts ache for all victims of this atrocity.

“As servants of God, we affirm that He calls upon all of us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and we pray for a peaceful resolution of all conflicts.”

I hope Peterson reads this and retracts his comments of support for the bombing of a civilian population in Gaza. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

Separately, my view is that Israel is doing exactly what Hamas anticipated they would do. Hamas want to undermine Israel’s global standing, and provoking Israel into bombing civilian populations, starving civilian populations, and what amounts to an ethnic clearance of a million or more innocent civilians, will serve Hamas more than it will serve Israel in the long run.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

The real situation is more difficult than a trivial attack on DCP.
You’re correct. It’s absolutely horrific. There are new reports of dozens of infants beheaded.
There are some pretty good indications that the beheaded infants claim is another “babies dumped out of incubators” story. I’m distrustful of atrocity porn.

The slaughter of infants and children, which is verified, is more than enough atrocity.

This might get as close as you’re willing to come in retracting your comments in regards to DCP’s words as he described what he has seen in the reports coming out of Gaza/Israel.

I don’t see anything in what he said that would make him out to be a bad Christian.

I don’t expect you will answer the questions I asked of you. Although I would be happily surprised if you did.

It seems the Israeli government has been publishing uncensored photos to dispel the idea that this is just hyperbole.

You may have seen something I haven't, but the reports of that I have read say that the photos certainly show murdered children, but not decapitation. Last I looked, the source of the claims was a single individual -- a rightwing settler in the West Bank who advocated burning down at least one Palestinian village.

It took months for the incubator claim in the invasion of Kuwait to crumble. The testimony of the key eyewitness went from saying she personally witnessed 15 babies being dumped on the floor by Iraqi soldiers and left to die, to seeing a glimpse of a baby being taken out of an incubator in the next room but she couldn't tell whether it was another soldier or doctor who did it, to (if I remember correctly) she wasn't even in the hospital at the time, but a friend was.

I think we're going to be hearing all kinds of atrocity porn over the next few weeks (or months). We've got an out of control fire raging -- no need to throw gasoline on it.

I have a Question,

Because you have rushed to judgement in this you sound as if in observing two wrongs do not make a right you are thinking that in response to bombing of Pearl Harbor the US should have sent roses to Japan and promised to stay out of their way (with a request to please play nice).

You are likely correct that Hamas wanted to provoke Israel, "make us into martyrs." I do not think the observation solves the problem of how to proceed.

I’m going to jump here and say that, if you are of the view that DCP did something wrong here, ask yourself how you look trying to make hay out of it. This topic is so sensitive and difficult, that I would venture to say that non-experts ought to exercise a lot of care and self-restraint when discussing it.

I know what I have to say about the conflict:

I pray for the suffering people of Israel and Palestine. May there be a peaceful solution and an end to the suffering.

You've projected a lot into what I actually said there huckleberry. I've not mentioned Pearl Harbour, nor Roses, nor Playing nice. My point is this - Gaza is being turned into a ghetto for all those innocent Palestinians. I would have thought that of all nations, Israel would not want to inflict that upon another people. Bombing the crap out of an innocent population, cutting off their water and their energy, serves only to make the wrong people suffer. What Hamas did to innocent Israelis is wrong and should be condemned. What Israel is doing to innocent Palestinians is wrong, and should be condemned. Two wrongs do not make a right.
You are likely correct that Hamas wanted to provoke Israel, "make us into martyrs." I do not think the observation solves the problem of how to proceed.
I think there's wider geopolitics at play here. Iran supplies circa 75% of the funding and weaponry for Hamas. Why? Well, more astute observers than I have pointed out that the Middle East has been gradually moving closer to stabilisation. That does not suit Iran, because they aren't part of it and are perhaps feeling isolated. So they prompt their puppet army Hamas, into an act they they hope will take things back to being destabilised. I guess that's to Iran's advantage in ways that economic and geopolitical analysts will undoubtedly be reporting in their analysis of this conflict.

In terms of how to proceed, well that's someone else's responsibility. I'm simply a nobody on a message board that thinks innocent people suffering because of others wrongdoing, is something that should be avoided. Peterson disagrees and thinks the deaths of innocents is acceptable collateral damage - which is an unchristian stance to take, and it doesn’t reflect his Prophet’s position on the conflict.
