Thanks Jersy Girl. That’s kind of tough. Borders are an interesting issue. I would ask what language are they speaking.

Arabic was and is being spoken in Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Gaza, the town of Jericho in the West Bank and surrounding areas. They are and were not speaking Palestinian.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s Hebrew was brought back to the area.

Do you have anything for me that goes back to the Old Testament borders that were reportedly taken from the Canaanites and gifted to the Hebrews by Yahweh and moves forward in time? I know, for example, that there are multiple and different books titled "Whose land is it anyway"?

Got something like that?

I know what the borders were originally according to the Old Testament. I want to know how and why they changed over time. Kind of like the maps that Cam posted but with the historical information that explains the shifting of borders and how that came to be.

I want to try to understand how we got to where we are today. If that's even possible in one single book which I doubt.

That’s akin to saying the Jews aren’t speaking Israeli, and the Jordanians aren’t speaking Jordanese. And remember, ‘Israel’ back around 1000 bc was just two Monarchal tribes united by alliance. In other words, the ‘Jews’ are just an ethnicity that had shifting political boundaries just like the Arabs. Today’s Palestinians have every right to create a political identity just like Judah did, even more so when you have a regional superpower stealing your land and killing you slowly, methodically, and won’t stop for anything.

Please excuse my butting into a discussion that is, I realise, about whether it is reasonable for people whose ancestors lived in the region whose geographical designation as 'Palestine' is of very long date to call themselves Palestinians today. However, if you ask people who so designate themselves what language they speak, I think you will find that the great majority of them will tell you that they speak Arabic, not "Palestinian". On the other hand, the majority of people who designate themselves as Israeli will tell you that they speak Hebrew, not 'Israeli'.

As George W. Bush once had to be reminded in the case of Mexico, people do not necessarily always speak a language whose name comes from the name of their national identity..

Besides the political boundaries in this region, it's important to note the geographical and climatic ones. Roughly the southern half of Israeli territory is desert. A whole lot of map can change hands, down there, without many actual people being involved.

The northwestern third or so of the country, on the other hand, is beautiful Mediterranean coastal plain. That's land that really matters.

I was looking at the language of the area. Definitely Arabic was spoken, but it came from Aramaic, which I recall was reportedly what Jesus spoke. Aramaic came from the Phoenicians and their alphabet. When I see the word Phoenicians I think of the city of Tyre which was around when the Cannanite tribes were in the area.

The Moabites spoke a language, not Hebrew, as we have the Moabite Stone dated around 900 BC. Akkadian was spoken due to Sennacherib's campaign against Judah. Sennacherib also expressed his thoughts on a stone writing about Hezekiah which are not that flattering.

I think the area today has a long history of disparaging their neighbors and writing it down. In the last few days I was rereading from Genesis 10 through 25, about those outside of the Hebrew tribes and it also is not flattering to the outsiders.

Today (1 December 2023) Israel and those who control Gaza are back at it fighting.
