Mormons Against Trump

Post by Kishkumen »

I am starting this thread partly because I want to counter the “Mormons Made Great Nazis” thread. I am proud to be Mormon, even though I do not affiliate with the LDS Church, because a growing number of Mormons, especially younger ones, oppose Trump, a political “leader” with a very strong combination of amoralism and authoritarianism.

Trump is in many ways the antithesis of Mormon teachings and values. He is a corrupt, lying, vulgar idiot who takes delight in bullying others. He is so detestable that one frankly struggles to understand how anyone supports him. He is obviously that disgusting, and yet most Evangelicals (although that number is decreasing a little too) still support him. It has been a real credit to Mormonism to see that Mormons lag behind other conservative religious groups in their support of Trump.

And it isn’t just Mitt Romney and Rusty Bowers. Some rank and file Mormon Republicans are being very public and vocal about their opposition to Trump:

So kudos to the growing numbers of LDS Mormons who have split from their fellow LDS Republicans and stopped supporting Trump. No one should have ever supported this clear menace to the Republic, but I am heartened that my people are not all following along like lemmings and supporting the worst, most dangerous US politician in 50 years or more, if not ever.

Now now, Kish. Leviticus 6:9

“Let he who has not yet raw dogged a pornstar just after the birth of his fifth child with his third wife cast the first stone.”

Hugh Nibley claimed he bumped into Adolf Hitler, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Gertrude Stein, and the Grand Duke Vladimir Romanoff. Dishonesty is baked into Mormonism.

I am approaching a critical time in my investments for retirement when I will move from moderate risk to conservative. The timing on such a move is critical. If Trump is elected and has the same impact on those investments as he did in his previous term, it will mean a huge difference in how much money I have and yet I still want him to lose.

Mormons who vote for Trump are choosing money over morality.

You answered your own question:
He is a corrupt, lying, vulgar idiot who takes delight in bullying others
Those of us who were fans of WWF understand the narrative twist from liking good-guys characters who kept the rules, said their prayers and despised Russia to rooting for heels who cheated and had bad manners. If you think about who made up the WWF fan base in the 80s and 90s it makes even more sense. There were some fascinating subtleties -- it was by no means orchestrated, and driven significantly by the fans, as Vince McMahon admitted with his own impromptu switch to heel beneath the cheers of the crowd. One of my favorites was the introduction of the character IRS. He didn't last very long, and few people will remember him. But he came into the ring with a shirt and tie and briefcase and in his angry voice took the microphone and reminded the crowd that April 15th was coming up and ordered them to pay their taxes.

Anyway, I have to say for the record, in keeping an even score on the new threads that have been opened, that the apologist noted for his unique brand of rudeness in the same venue which is supposedly geopolitical speaks badly about Trump. So have to give him credit for that.

I know off topic... But, what is a proud Mormon but doesn't affiliate with the LDS mean?

The simplest explanation is that Mormon is my identity, not my ecclesiastical affiliation.
