The Tapir should be a hate symbol according to Public Square Magazine.

Post by Rivendale »

This was on the most recent episode of Mormon Land podcast. https://www.sltrib.com/podcasts/mormonland/

They actually called for Amicus briefs to be filed. My first thought was, "what is next, rocks?"

From the introduction:
. . . no independent organization is dedicated to civil rights for members. It’s time to change that, argues Public Square Magazine. In a recent staff editorial, the online publication written from a Latter-day Saint perspective, called for the establishment of a civil rights organization to advocate for the rights of members in “political, legal and cultural spaces.”
Dan can't escape the blame for the Sorenson idea. Link on exmormon reddit:

I think there's a stronger case for calling this word hate speech: when lds people call Native Americans "Lamanites."

The tapir a hate symbol? Who’s smoking what over there?

A picture is worth a thousand words. The tapir concisely represents the mental gymnastics Mormons do to support a historical Book of Mormon.

I can see why they are annoyed that it's so effective.

The Saints (especially the ones in the Orem-Provo area) should show some Tapir pride.

And don't forget about Velociraptor Pride!

kishkumen, I am not sure who is smoking what.

I listened to the whole rather bland interview. Amicus briefs were floated about possible employment issues, requirements to work on Sunday. The tapir was observed to be used by some exMormon groups. They thought that observation might have mitigated information about Ensign Peak from a source with a tapir. No campaign against tapirs was contemplated that I could detect. I was dubious that making public the source of Ensign Peak information would make any hoped for difference. In general if they want to spread information about their view of the church, the contemplated subject, it is ok as far as I am concerned.

They did use Tapirs regarding the SEC violation. They said that it was a dog whistle for the anti Mormon groups to be informed. It specifically said Tapirs were a symbol for antimormonism on the internet.

Edit. From Dan Vogel:
The mocking of stupid apologetics is not hate.

I would certainly agree with Dan here. I think if this Mormon group tried a campaign against tapir images it would influence for tapir and against mopologists more than the Ensign Peak information did.

I had not thought of a tapir as ex-Mormon identification but that exmormon redit linked has a tapir at the top.

I think the presented project was rather hopelessly unclear as to goal and means. It sounded like they wanted to form a group to be ready for some campaign. They spent more time on that Book of Mormon movie I have not seen which pokes some fun at the church. I did not hear them make any suggestion on how they wanted to respond. Something somehow or so.

In the land of the Mormons, where faith runs so deep,
A crisis emerged, making leaders lose sleep.
The tapir, so gentle, so meek and so mild,
Became the new symbol, leaving Saints quite riled.
"Anti-Mormons," they cried, "with their bitter, harsh spite,
Are targeting tapirs, oh what a plight!
They mock our beliefs, say our horses are wrong,
But we'll save the tapirs, with a hymn and a song!"

"Unite!" shout the Saints, in defense of this beast,
"We'll fight for its honor, from west to the east.
Those critics, they twist every scripture and fact,
But tapirs, they stand, as our truth they attract.
In the Book of Mormon, our faith finds its source,
And tapirs, they gallop, like the finest of horse.
So join in the battle, with fervor and cheer,
For saving the tapirs, our mission is clear!"
