An investment firm for the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made a filing that would see Orlando, Fla., nearly double in size.
On Monday, Farmland Reserve announced it is seeking to voluntarily annex 52,450 acres of its central Florida Deseret Ranch property into the City of Orlando. The move would nearly double Orlando’s size, which currently has a reported acreage of nearly 88,000.
The ranch, founded in 1950, reportedly focuses on producing fruit, harvesting timber, and running a cattle operation, while leasing land for solar energy.
Doug Rose, the president of Farmland Reserve, said annexing into Orlando would allow the firm to look ahead to the future and beyond by helping establish a long-term vision as an integral, unified planning area in a growing region.
“We are a caring, responsible landowner who works sustainably and gives back to our communities. We see planning as investing in a healthy, prosperous future for Central Florida,” said Rose. “Putting this Deseret Ranch property under a single municipal government will avoid the piecemeal planning of the past.”
I’m unsure what the Church is doing with this. But I’d wager it’s going to be profitable for the Church and be damned everyone else.

My guess is that it is to eventually start selling it off for developing as residential master plan communities. There're likely advantages (not just in permitting and zoning, but in pricing/value) to having it within the municipality or Orlando rather than in the unincorporated Orange County. Probably fewer hurdles for trenching utilities, etc. when it's part of the municipality as well.
This portion they want annexed represents only about 17% of the total land holdings of Deseret Ranches in Florida.
God wants them to turn a maximum profit on this land. Building the new Oaks Temple with its 1191 ft spire and surrounding it with luxury LDS homes would be a big plus for the residents of this new Orlando suburb.
Has the once-proposed Lamoni City with a population of 500,000 hit a multi-jurisdictional snag?
