Robert Boylan wrote:I just launched a new Patreon account. Recent events have led me to bite the bullet and try to follow a dream of being an independent researcher/writer/lecturer/apologist a full-time (or close to full-time) occupation (as well as perhaps follow another dream - to one day get a PhD in theology); I hope to have some financial backing between now and the end of this year, and be more or less at 100% productivity (see below) at the beginning of 2025.
Here is (1) the "Welcome" post on the Patreon page that discusses the goals I wish to pursue and (2) a break-down of the tiers:
Welcome!
My name is Robert Boylan and I am the proprietor of the Scriptural Mormonism Blog & Podcast.
I hold degrees in theology and anthropology, and for a numbers of years now, have been engaging in research into Latter-day Saint history, Scripture, and theology, both as an apologist, and from 2021-2024, as a senior research analysis for the B. H. Roberts Foundation.
Recent events have forced me to take a risk and try to do apologetics on a full-time basis. I also hope to finally get my MA and/or PhD in theology, so wish to make a career out of this.
What I hope to do on a full-time basis includes:
· Continued research into biblical and Latter-day Saint issues
· I am willing to be hired (depending on the project) to track down, transcribe, and “weigh” (e.g., if it is a primary or secondary source, etc) and help write articles based on said research (similar to what I did with the B. H. Roberts Foundation [e.g., Adam-God; White Horse Prophecy; Book of Mormon anachronisms]).
· Make such studies & scholarship available to Latter-day Saints via youtube, my blog, conference calls, and online lessons
· Set up a professional Website for lengthier articles
· Provide lectures viz Zoom on topics such as introduction to theology and theological terms, introduction to historical-grammatical methods of exegesis, and/or any other topics (e.g., interactions with Catholic and Protestant theologies; lecture series on Mariology; sacramental theology; how to become an effective apologist, etc) patrons are interested in paying for
· Podcasting and regular (if not daily) livestreams on youtube
· Interviewing leading experts in their particular fields on my podcast (both LDS and non-LDS scholars)
· Write scripts and produce documentary-length videos on particular topics
· Start making reprints of out-of-date classics that are in the public domain (both LDS and non-LDS works)
· Rent an office for my work (where I will record videos, engage in research, put bookshelves in, have live meetings and lectures with people, etc)
· Get annual subscriptions to TLG (Thesaurus Linguae Graecae), various newspaper archives (e.g., newspapers.com), JSTOR and other venues for research into ancient and modern history and scholarship as well as Chat GPT (which is amazing for transcribing handwritten texts)
· Write books for both a LDS and non-LDS audience (I have been requested by people to one day write a monograph on Adam-God as well as another on the development of early Latter-day Saint Christology, for instance; I also hope to gather a number of scholars together and edit a book on textual criticism and its implications for 1 Nephi 13 and the 8th Article of Faith.)
· Engage in public moderated debates with critics of the Church
· Many other things, too, of course (e.g., when possible, travel to give guest lectures and, when presiding authorities agree to such, firesides)
So what do I need from you? Of course, to engage in research/apologetics/scholarship on a full-time basis means I need to make money so I can do such (and I also like to eat on a daily basis!), such as being able to purchase scholarly volumes, access peer-reviewed articles, and purchase more professional hardware and software for podcasting/streaming, etc.

He really needs to lean into the YouTuber vibe and start doing humiliating things for donations on livestream.

Not that I would ever send Boylan any money, but I might have confidence in his ability to accomplish items on his list of things he would like to do if he could at least write well.

He noted that he’s “no longer working” for the B.H. Roberts Foundation yesterday in a video and added that if people want to know the reason, they can PM him, but he’s not going to go public with the reason because he still likes “Josh and the Foundation.”

I wonder if it has anything to do with this unseemly incident:

Re: Robert Boylan unemployed and needs your money
I am sorry he lost his job. He should apply to a PhD program. Maybe he will get a fellowship and thus a small, steady income while he pursues his studies.
