Harris' Mormon Strategy in Arizona

Post by Moksha »

By Jonathan J. Cooper The Associated Press
PHOENIX (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris is stepping up her efforts to win over voters who belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, enlisting prominent members of the faith to make the case in pivotal Arizona that Donald Trump does not align with the church’s values.

Her state campaign announced on Thursday an advisory committee to formalize the outreach to current and former members of the church, widely known as the Mormon church.

With nearly 450,000 church members in Arizona, about 6% of the state’s population, Latter-day Saints and former church members could prove critical in what will likely be an extremely close race.

Two factors that have been consistent in Mormonism have been a firm belief in steeple height and Republicanism. It has been said that you can take reasoning out of the LDS but not the Republicanism.

Does Harris stand a chance with this strategy? Seems to me that Trump's values align perfectly with the Brethren.

I'm guessing that Trump will sweep the Arizona Mormon vote by 80% to 20% and that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square will perform at Trump's inauguration/coronation along with Kid Rock and precision marching group from North Korea.

That frightens me! How can a religion that supposedly advocates, honesty, compassion and morality even begin to support anyone as evil and obviously corrupt as Donald J. Trump? I am also frightened by this: How Supreme Court could 'hand the presidency to Trump'
During an early August appearance on ITK, radio host Charlamagne tha God predicted that if Vice President Kamala Harris wins the 2024 presidential race, the "corrupt" and "illegitimate" U.S. Supreme Court will overturn the election results and put GOP rival Donald Trump back in the White House. And Charlamagne isn't the only one who fears that possibility.

In an article published on September 20, Salon's Heather Digby Parton also warns that because of the Roberts Court, Trump could lose the election yet return to the White House anyway.

Parton argues that if MAGA Republicans stir up enough chaos after the election and the matter is litigated to the High Court, the GOP-appointed justices cannot be trusted to do the right thing.

Parton also examines "concerns about the role of the House speaker should the Republicans maintain their majority."

"The current Speaker Mike Johnson wrote an amicus brief back in 2020 on behalf of Trump asking the Supreme Court to essentially overturn swing-state results," Parton notes. "There are concerns that if he is the speaker next January 6, he will use the power of his office for Trump's benefit once again. Politico reports there are several possibilities, ranging from changing the rules, which merely exist by tradition, for the counting of the votes on January 6 to asking the courts to rule on the constitutionality of the ECRA (Electoral Count Reform Act). That would inevitably end up in the Supreme Court as well."

Parton adds, "In fact, it appears that if they really push this, all roads lead to the High Court, which is terrifying…. This is not a court I would trust to be judicious when it comes to this presidential election."

The good news, according to Parton, is that "Democrats are prepared with legal responses every step of the way."

"But if the election is very close and it ends up in the Supreme Court as Bush v. Gore did, there is a very good chance they will hand the presidency to (Trump)," Parton warns. "They clearly have no care for whatever legitimacy they once had."
Justices Thomas and Alito, at least, clearly seem to be in the pocket of wealthy corporate donors from whom they have accepted literally millions in gifts and bribes and should have recused themselves from numerous cases involving those donors. I don't see how one can reasonably deny they are guilty of breaking the law on behalf of both themselves and those donors. In my opinion they are in the same predicament as Trump, himself: They know that their only hope of avoiding just criminal prosecution of themselves is retaining or regaining the power to which they aspire. The conservative justices (especially the ones Trump, himself, appointed) seem willing to bend over backwards, if necessary, to accommodate Trump whenever possible.
No precept or claim is more suspect or more likely to be false than one that can only be supported by invoking the claim of Divine authority for it--no matter who or what claims such authority.

I think Evangelicals and Mormons view things differently than most people in the world (maybe not the Taliban and North Korea) and have different definitions for words like honesty, truth, and integrity. That is what makes them firm Trump supporters and MAGAtes. Thankfully there is a minority voice in both religious groups that does not buy into this.

That would be a win for Harris. Peeling off 20% of an otherwise opposition constituency would be, well, Yuuge.

It's also worth noting the mayor of Mesa, with one of the largest LDS communities, is a Mormon and politically conservative who spoke at the DNC declaring he would not vote for Trump and would vote for Harris to keep Trump out of the White House.

Jeff Flake was as Republican as a person could be and he left national politics as a Trump opponent.

I'd argue that for all the flaws of the LDS faith, there is genuine love of country in LDS culture. And if a member of the LDS church sees Trump for the genuine threat he is, it can be enough to motivate them to vote for a Democrat in a swing state in the hope the Trump fever will break.

Talk is cheap. They advocate for a bunch of stuff they don't practice. In other words, it's a religion. Deception (self and otherwise) is the fuel that keeps it going. That's part of what makes MAGA a cult. It's all blustery, empty BS.

And let's face it; the kind of morality most religions advocate is a stretch to call morality. Letting women die because you're "pro-life" isn't moral. It's depraved, as is lying about your "god experiences."
Religion is for people whose existential fear is greater than their common sense.

The god idea is popular with desperate people.

I sincerely hope Moksha is wrong about Trump sweeping the Arizona Mormon vote. It is encouraging that some prominent and well-known Mormons in Arizona, like the mayor of Mesa and Jeff Flake are supporting for Harris. All of the church's general authorities should vote against Trump, if they are really the advocates for Jesus Christ and his teachings they claim to be. I would not be surprised if a significant number of them are refraining from Criticizing Trump only because they fear a massive backlash and apostasy from Mormon Maga-Ites if they do.

Going after Arizona Mormons is smart. The fact their vote could matter could sway some. Utah Mormons? No politician will spend political capital voting for a Democrat when abstaining from voting for Trump gives them the opportunity to oppose him with minimal risk. If he is defeated. But Utah won't play a part in that defeat.

Trump can’t even come up with a single idea or plan to turn around his own company, which is losing money and tanking in the stock market every day. He’s got no answers. He keeps running one business after another into the ground. But, his followers keep buying his shoes and ****coins, so… cult it is.

It's been 9 years since Trump ran for President, and at this point, all he has is a concept of a plan for health care. He has no problem crapping all over the Affordable Health Care act, but has no alternatives. This idiot wants to run our country. And only a idiot would vote for him.

And by the way, if me calling Trump voters idiots motivates idiots even further to vote for Trump, thanks for validating my point. Only a idiot would vote based on malice.
