The middle 1/3 of Americans who barely can name the President and definitely can't name their Congresspeople are not going to get what they want from a Trump Presidency (namely lower prices on housing, food, cars, gas, etc.) and will swing right back to the Democrats. Some Schmo wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 6:21 pmYeah, the Democrats are going to do some real soul searching and figure out how to appeal to damned morons now. Re: I Want My Party Back
the question becomes --- will there be enough or something redeemable to swing back to?
Many of the red states are going to become impenetrable for democrats, even when they are in the marked majority via gerrymandering that the current Supreme Court will let stand.
Is it a democracy when the system is rigged impossibly?

Ceebs, we can each play the game of picking the most extreme outlier in government and pretending that the cherry picked voice represents the views of the whole. The Relief Society just elected a Congress critter who wants to jail gay folks, just like in Uganda. I could claim that he represents all Relief Society, but I think we both know that’s BS.ceeboo wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 6:57 pmAccording to Maxine Waters (congresswoman from California) the white people are to blame. No, absolutely not. The Republicans are not to blame for our failure to win the election.

I will allow a few minutes for you to read my reply and then I will delete the Maxine post.
Really? That's bonkers! The Relief Society just elected a Congress critter who wants to jail gay folks, just like in Uganda.
Yes, if you did that (like others do here on the daily) it would be BS.I could claim that he represents all Relief Society, but I think we both know that’s BS.

I'm wondering if the people you're talking about even vote.Bond wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 7:06 pmThe middle 1/3 of Americans who barely can name the President and definitely can't name their Congresspeople are not going to get what they want from a Trump Presidency (namely lower prices on housing, food, cars, gas, etc.) and will swing right back to the Democrats. Some Schmo wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 6:21 pmYeah, the Democrats are going to do some real soul searching and figure out how to appeal to damned morons now. There's an article on The Bulwark about how Democrats should do nothing to stop Trump's impulses. Let him completely MAGAfy the country and then see if his supporters like it. I agree with it in principle.
The problem is that Trump voters are so damned gullible, they will believe it when they are told it's all the Democrats' fault, even when Democrats hold no majorities. Lots of them currently believe Obama has been running things in the background.
I'm not sure there's any amount of pain that can cure stupid.

Gas prices, and inflation are two of the biggest and most glaring examples of this phenomenon, in my opinion. You can literally watch gas prices and inflation rise the longer Trump's OPEC deal was in place, and the second it expired during Biden's term, you can see gas prices and inflation respond in only a month's time. Sure, we lost about 70% of our domestic oil drills, had a huge swath of American oil companies go bankrupt, and lost a chunk of our refining capacity under Trump... but it's totes Biden's fault. Dark Brandon, and his time machine! Some Schmo wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 7:45 pm[T]hey will believe it when they are told it's all the Democrats' fault[...]
Or when Biden was criticized for selling off the SPR. It was literally Trump that signed the bill that mandated the sell off. Biden just did it in a way that maximized federal revenue, and assisted Americans, while prices were at their highest, rather than doing it slowly over the course of years.
One of my favorites is Trump railing against the app that Biden and Harris gave for immigrants to use, and his supporters falling for it hook-line-and-sinker. The app was rolled out under Trump.
Another one that is kind of fringe, but cracks me up, is that under Biden the design of the Washington Quarter was changed to turn his back to "In God We Trust." The redesign legislation, once again... (*drumroll*)... signed by Trump.
There are, naturally, many other examples, but these are the ones that always give me a combination of a chuckle, and a facepalm.

Now that you’ve provided important facts to correct some of the BS fed to MAGA voters by its leadership, I’m sure that those voters will quickly … go right back to blaming Biden for all of these offenses.
ETA: I’m pretty sure that Washington facing away from ‘In God We Trust’ was the case for every year between 2020 and 1999, to when the State Quarter program was launched. The design reverted to facing that motto only in 2021, for that year’s ‘Crossing the Delaware’ commemorative issue, before updating the design again with a new portrait in 2022. Apparently, MAGA hasn’t noticed what their change looks like for over two decades, let alone been upset about it, until Dark Brandon took over and ruined everything by not doing what they claim he did.

You’re preaching to the choir in this case HOH. I was the lone voice in conversations raising this issue. Everyone said I was nuts.Hound of Heaven wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 4:08 pmNo, absolutely not. The Republicans are not to blame for our failure to win the election. yet I continue to see progressives on TV asserting exactly that. The reality is that we have a president who garnered 81 million votes, which is 12 million more than what Obama received. This marks the highest number of votes ever garnered by a presidential candidate in the history of presidential elections. A group of apprehensive Democratic elites sidelined the only presidential candidate in history who garnered over 80 million votes. This will be remembered as the most significant error in the history of presidential elections. If Biden remains the nominee, even with a 10% decrease in support from his 2020 voters, he would still secure the presidency in 2025. George Clooney, Oprah, the Clintons, and the Obamas have made a significant error. They became fearful and believed that investing 1.5 billion dollars would conceal Harris's shortcomings.
"I have learned with what evils tyranny infects a state. For it frustrates all the virtues, robs freedom of its lofty mood, and opens a school of fawning and terror, inasmuch as it leaves matters not to the wisdom of the laws, but to the angry whim of those who are in authority.”

Re: I Want My Party Back
Ah, I seem to remember saying at the time that replacing Biden with Kamala was political malpractice. I didn't want to be right at the time, and I was genuinely impressed with how she seemed to have improved since 2019 as a politician, but as I reflect on it now, I think my instinct may have been partially right.
At the same time, I don't think we can overlook the idiocy of the electorate. I can't get past them as the primary source of blame. In the world we grew up in, where politicians were graded on character, Harris is a good candidate. The problem is that's not the world we live in any more.
