Boylan doesn’t need any of that to impress 18 year old missionaries, fortunately.

MG. 2.0, Universal Rule #10 reads:

Do not EVER "link-and-run." If you post a link to something, always explain what's at the other end of the link, why it's important, and what you hope other readers / viewers learn from it. RULE OF THUMB: If it's not worth your time to describe it, then it's not worth our time to click on it.
In regards to the link I posted:

https://m.youtube.com/@churchhistorymat ... ast/videos

I thought it rather obvious as to why it was "worth bookmarking". If you go to the link there are over 300 videos, each one of some length with various presenters, dealing with many different and interesting topics having to do with Mormonism. Having to lay out that ONE FACT I didn't feel was necessary. But alas, yes it was.

I posted the link from having come across it while digging a bit into another poster's comments. I hadn't even had time to actually WATCH any of the videos. It was the FACT that there were so many that I thought was worth posting the link so that others could see the same.

Sheesh.

MG,

I think you’re confusing quantity with quality. The point of a discussion board is to discuss ideas.

If I posted a link to Mormon Stories, with its 1000+ episodes, that would do nothing to create a discussion with you.

I would have to single out one idea from those videos and actually present it to you. That’s the part you keep refusing to do.

*You* have to do the work of finding a compelling thing to talk about and bring it to us. That is not our job to do that work for you.

Providing the link wasn't meant to be a discussion point. It was merely a reference that I thought might be interesting to some as they are learning at their own speed and on their own time. Nothing more, nothing less.

I am not opposed, at all, to "discussing ideas". I have done just that many, many, times on this board. Now and then, however, I come across what appears to be a treasure trove of information located in one place. This link leads to one of those places.

I'm not sure exactly why this something that you would be opposed to?

Again, my goal, when posting the link, was simply to provide what I thought to be a wide ranging source of video production/topics that some might find enlightening and worthwhile. Granted, others would just as well not have folks click on the link and go to that particular website for one reason or another. Understood.

I believe the “post and run” rule is designed to prevent this site from becoming a dumping ground. After all, this is a discussion board.

Was there one video in particular, or one idea in those videos that you found compelling?

You haven’t answered the question. You know you haven’t answered the question. You can’t answer the question because you have invested any time into perusing your link and learning anything from it.

Again and again and again and again.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

Yes, he could not explain his link because he didn't actually watch any of it, but he also used it a vehicle to get in his usual passive aggressive send-off:

I’m sure all of us are very preoccupied with shutting down faithful information. He caught us.

Perhaps the best reason why original research and thorough understanding of previous knowledge are expected to go together today is just that previous knowledge is not very good. The wisdom of today only seems impressive from a distance, when you don't understand it. To understand and appreciate it properly is to realise how lousy it is. If you don't feel that you can improve it, at least a little bit, somewhere, then you must not really understand it.

Well said. In my field (the same as James') we are particularly affected by the "replication crisis" ("classic" effects and findings can't be replicated by other scientists). So I can look at a scholar's shelves full of 200 psych books and estimate that we can have confidence in maybe 30% (with pretty big error bars) of that previous knowledge.
