It was of no interest to Elder Snow when it did not directly affect him and his family.
But now that it does, ...
Yes. There’s something insincere about his comments. It’s just a grandfather belatedly trying to offset decades of promoting homophobia in order to get into the good books of the granddaughters that his beliefs have disenfranchised. I wonder if he has apologised to them? I’m guessing not as he’s not calling on Church Leaders to change. He’s blaming the members for his wrongdoing.
He distances himself from responsibility by using “We need to…” all the time. I’d have more respect for him had he apologised for the stances he took, for the policies he supported, and talked about what he is going to do. The royal “We” is just a deflection of culpability so he can blame others.
MG 2.0 deploys the same cheap “sleight of hand” so maybe it’s a Mormon thing.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.
Interestingly enough, the LDS church is at a bit of an odd precipice. They can go the modernist route as the mainline has and liberalize and accept the LGBTQ+ which ironically enough would lead them back to acceptance of polygamy.
However the stalwart conservative types, that in their apologetics still parrot FAIR answers instead of Blake Ostler, can’t have that. Social conservatism to them matters quite a bit and so they’d double down and possibly return to the not quite fundamentalist LDS teaching of the church but darn close. Negating the official re-brand to seem closer to
“Moral Majority” broad evangelicalism. It’s lose-lose either way though for their claims of being “unchanging” in terms of doctrinal stance and development

If I recall correctly, the membership numbers of the Reorganized church (now CoC) dropped due to liberalizing their policies around LGBTQ+. This is seen, by more conservative LDS members, as a warning against modernization.
Fair enough, in a way, if number of members is of great significance to the organization.
However, it's also not uncommon for LDS members to claim that the relatively small size of the LDS church, with regard to Christianity in general, is not a problem - many called but few chosen, etc.

I'm willing to give him the benefit of a doubt. I think that as more leadership has direct experience with family members or associates that are gay that there will be a greater move towards 'curiosity'. My belief is that God responds to the needs/wants of his children within the 'agency framework'. As leaders become more curious and then have their own serious questions and then bring those questions to God...we may see change. Or not. We'll have to wait and see.

Good post MG. I agree that it's just a matter of time until some of the leadership become bi-curious.
"I'm on paid sabbatical from BYU in exchange for my promise to use this time to finish two books."
Pushing away allies who came late to the struggle makes no sense. Snow should be welcomed, even though his awakening was only because of personal experience.
It's better to have someone of his former stature saying these things than not at all. It's extremely brave of him since people will want him excommunicated for this.
I concur.

I think the Book of Mormon makes it pretty clear that "ALL are alike unto God". It takes people, even those that are religious leaders, to figure this out and/or get revelation that makes it clear that God's love "surpasses all understanding". Understanding can be a slow and tedious process. I think God works within that paradigm and forces no man/woman to change until they are curious and ready to question their own assumptions.

Whoa there, little buckaroo. That's the same Book of Mormon that
“And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity … as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.” 2 Nephi 5:21
Mormon God did not want all to be alike. But cursed a people with a marking, so others could clearly identify even the offspring of those who had been iniquitous. Making them all to be not enticing to "my people". The Book of Mormon is all about social stratifications.

My post makes it clear that in God's eyes, all are alike. They are all loved and valued. God's love is all encompassing. But God works within the paradigm of agency.
We've been through that. Agency can actually cause whole groups of people to be separated/differentiated because of their choices.

Your post doesn't take into account racist Mormon God, as illustrated in spades in the very same tome.
