You don't have the foggiest notion of what "wokeness" is really about. It is simply being aware of the fact that not everyone thinks the same way you do and there are many good people who are unjustly treated and disadvantaged simply they are different in some way from the norm and that there are unfair and unjust inequities that need to be fought against. I adamantly repeat again that "Anti-wokeness" is basically just a euphemistic term for hateful bigotry and racism. Or, as you might consider it, the idea that the real and greater bigotry is adamant opposition to bigotry itself.

Does anyone actually self-identify as a "cultural Marxist"? I seriously doubt it. And does the phenomenon labeled as "cultural Marxism" genuinely relate to the ideas of Karl Marx? Again, I have my doubts.

The whole concept strikes me as deeply ironic. American Eagle promotes blue-eyed, blonde women as having "good genes." Some people become sensitive or critical of this portrayal. Understandable. Such critics might commonly be labeled as "liberal" or "progressive," but I believe a more accurate description is "politically correct." Political correctness stems from recognizing that certain groups have historically faced disrespect or marginalization, leading to efforts to consciously portray these groups positively today. For instance, the politically correct action might involve highlighting a beautiful black woman and attributing "good genes" to her.

We can debate the merits or drawbacks of political correctness itself. However, my main issue is specifically with the term "cultural Marxist." It seems obvious to me that this term is strategically employed because right-wing focus groups have identified it as especially inflammatory or villainous. Consequently, it gets used intentionally as a rhetorical weapon in their broader campaign of hostility.

Everyone in our culture, including people on the extreme right, are steeped in cultural Marxism because Marxism has had such a huge impact on intellectual history! But it is also kind dumb, and pardon me for saying so, to argue as though cultural Marxism does not exist. Of course it exists, and you can't escape it. It is woven into our discourse and can't be wrenched out!

I am tired of liberals acting as though there has been no left-oriented political discourse and action that the right pushes back against for reasons that are entirely consistent with their own concerns. Obviously the fascists use the specter of socialism, as they have since the early 20th century, to stir up society's stakeholders to choose them over the left. Wealth and property will always win out over fairness. I wish that were not so, but, at the end of the day, the mammal known as human wants its stuff to feel secure in the world. Saying they have to share their stuff with people they don't particularly feel attached to is just concerning enough to get people to reject the notion.

So, anything that suggests they need to give their stuff away to other people, some of them very odd seeming and off-putting, is a loser of a strategy. Christians would rather pervert Christianity out of recognition than do what Jesus commanded them to do. I hardly need more convincing that people who oppose fascism need cleverer strategies than openly declaring for socialism or trans rights. It is sadly that so many people are intellectually and emotionally small such that we end up in a position where they would rather take up with obviously predatory monsters than let a man wearing a dress read a story to their kids at school or pay to support civilization over barbarity.

To be fair, Kish, you're an academic in the humanities. Recognition of Marxist, feminist, Freudian, queer, colonial, and a myriad of other approaches is what you do--almost reflexively. Others are not so inclined. You're right to point this out, but it's not as obvious to everyone else as it is to you.

But Hound does have a point about the stupidity of identity politics. This advertisement for jeans implying eugenics? That is dumb, really dumb. The author, Holly's, only excuse for such embarrassingly stupid statements is that she is being ruled by professional need to get more attention for her voice.

Indeed. And I am not saying that the denials reflect poorly on the intelligence of the people making them. I think these denials come from being caricatured by one's opponents. To say that "Marxism" is a scare word and is abused in that way is an important point. Moreover, the people who are freaked out by the word Marxism are not ready to listen to the details of just how pervasive Marxism is in our culture. They have been taught that Marxism is Satanic and that is enough for them.

That said, there is plenty of ideological myopia around, and no "side" has a special immunity from it. I am tired of the allergic reaction to the word "western." While I agree wholeheartedly that western is used by some to indicate what is inherently superior, that does not mean the same word cannot be used practically to categorize the civilization that sprang from the Ancient Mediterranean in its interactions with surrounding peoples. I use the word in the latter sense all the time, and I will continue to use the term "western civilization" in a neutral way to distinguish some global developments from others, but there are those who take their war on the word western to the point of wanting exclude it from our conceptual lexicon altogether.

I have always said, and I feel vindicated completely in my view on this: extremism is the enemy.

Strangely, voting for Trump and having him land in office did not silence every opinion that MAGA deems bothersome or ‘unfun’.
