Disney Stock Takes a Dive

Post by Kishkumen »

Looks like Disney is paying for its capitulation to MAGA. The stock lost ~4 billion in value. Many people I know canceled their Disney+ subscriptions. I know we did.

By Thursday, hundreds of union writers and actors had protested outside Disney’s Burbank headquarters. Kimmel’s staff, who learned about the suspension just before taping, erupted in anger. On-air and off-air talent across Hollywood are calling foul, with high-profile creators like Damon Lindelof vowing not to work with Disney until Kimmel is reinstated, while Marvel stars like Mark Ruffalo and Tatiana Maslany have outwardly criticized the company.

“This is not how we thought Bob [Iger] would handle this,” one Disney executive told Deadline anonymously. “Senior people told him this is not what we should be doing. It’s such a betrayal.” Another compared the debacle to the company’s infamous silence during Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” controversy, calling the reaction “Don’t Say Gay on steroids.” Within hours, the Disney+ cancellation page was reportedly crashing from heavy traffic. Longtime parkgoers also began canceling trips to Disney resorts, while social media campaigns urging a full-scale Disney boycott spread rapidly.

For a company already reeling from declining linear TV revenue and costly streaming investments, the optics couldn’t be worse. “Continuing to give Mr. Kimmel a broadcast platform … is simply not in the public interest at the current time,” Nexstar Broadcasting President Andrew Alford said in a statement, but fans and shareholders alike seem to disagree.
Nexstar was just looking for Pappy Trump to give them those sweet monopoly exceptions they needed for their merger. As was the case in WWII Germany, the money people are about the money and nothing else. They would sell their own grandmothers down the river to make a buck. The Republic is not moving the needle for them. Give Trump what he wants and make big bucks is their calculus, so consumers will increase their boycotts.

Us too.

Us too.
We have been something of a Disney family for many years. We went to the theme parks regularly. We've even been on the cruises a couple of times. Over the years, Disney has gotten increasingly greedy and walked further away from Walt's legacy. Had it been up to me, we would have stopped going a long time ago. But, it is a place relatives want to meet up, so, as long as I did not have to see the bill, I would go along.

Now we have an even better reason not to go. We are putting a stop to all our Disney involvement.

That’s darling. Good for you, Kish. Way to stick it to Disney. You are so tough. Stunning.

We've had a similar history with Disney.

My daughter's grown up now, so we haven't been to a park in years. The MCU kind of sucks now. Turning old cartoons into live action movies is not my thing. And frankly, I've hated Hulu since we got it.

So all the stars have aligned. We don't need Disney anymore, assuming we ever did.

So, you are quitting what you’ve already quit? I have a feeling Sinclair and Disney have crunched some numbers.

No. Don’t mix emotions with investment. Including other people’s emotions.

Any other substance-free commentary, Whiskey?

What is your idea of tough? What have you done to impress anyone with what a hardass you are, outside of being an insult factory?

Storm the Capitol on January 6th did you?
