I apologize for my ignorance here, but I'm having difficulty processing this line:
“He [Aeschylus] once wrote: ‘Even in our sleep, pain which cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, until, in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the awful grace of God.’”
I've never seen God's (or gods' as the Greek tragedians may require) grace expressed as being "awful." Has there been some linguistic transformation or translation funk with the word? This makes more sense from a "full of awe" etymology rather than the negative context of awful (at least to me).

We need to look at the Greek word, not the English translation. Professor Kishkumen?
