Right now, I think the authoritarianism of the Trump Regime is best demonstrated by what he’s done to the DOJ.
Yep. Definitely. Trump's direct interference in the DOJ by directing Bondi to pursue the indictment of particular political enemies is transparently authoritarian.
The Comey indictment is a glaring example. It was originally referred to an office of the DOJ, which evaluated the evidence. The result of that type of review is generally a charging memo that recommends that the Department seek an indictment, or a declination memo recommending that the Department decline to prosecute.

Here a declination memo was written and the US attorney agreed. Trump fired (he claims) the US attorney, ordered Bond to prosecute Comey, and ordered that the junior member of his criminal defense team be appointed acting US attorney. She has zero experience as a prosecutor. A day or two later she convenes a grand jury and gets an indictment against Comey.

That’s pretty glaring.

Possibly. Though, it is arguable that what was done to the DOJ was done prior to Trump 47. Again, nobody is suggesting that the feds should not have a DOJ neither that they should control and direct the DOJ. Only, there is an issue of what is acceptable and what outcome is wanted. I mean, it was fine when Trump was getting a mugshot but not fine when he is taking them. The authority rests with the feds.
The mugshot in question was the result of an investigation by the State of Georgia’s Fulton County.

Not the Feds.

Yep! Really terrifying and clear evidence of Trump simply claiming that he has the power to do something, regardless of the law or any other consideration, and that he will force his "employees" to do his bidding or else. Not a president so much as a bad boss.

Hi Chap. Before passage of the 14th Amendment, the Supreme Court had generally held that the rights described in the bill of rights did not apply to the states. Afterward, the Court developed the incorporation doctrine, which holds that the limitations on the federal government found in the bill of rights also apply to state governments. So, the establishment clause in the First Amendment applies to state governments today.

When the Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution, several states had established churches. In a relatively short period of time, those states chose to prohibit established churches through their own laws and constitutions.
Thanks to Res Ipsa for settling this point for me. That seems more reasonable - though of course I do understand that "being reasonable" is by no means something one can automatically expect of the law..

On my later point about me (as a non-citizen) being forced to adopt or abjure some religious belief by a state government, that was purely theoretical, since my contacts with US colleagues have convinced me that it is not a great time to pay them a visit, and that situation is not likely to change for the next few years. Or, if things go really badly, during the long reign of the coming President for Life.
You’re welcome. And you are spot on when it comes to expectations that law is reasonable.

It pains me to admit that your conclusions about visiting here are perfectly reasonable. My Canadian relatives feel the same.

And you make this conclusion based on your assgorithm?

It is very clear that I do. It is also very clear that I can acknowledge the parts and elements, without needing to frame it in an ideology.
It is very clear that you believe you do. You have not demonstrated here that you in fact do.
Au contraire mon frere.

See. I understand authoritarianism and authority. It is interesting to me that outcomes that you do not like are authoritarian, but the structure to achieve that outcome is exactly what you want. This is true for most people, in my observation. The structure and process chosen and accepted by the majority of Americans is more fed, more fed, more fed. The exceptions seem to be abortion and education. It is only when the feds do crap they do not like, that the bitching and moaning of authoritarianism gets super duper loud.

Feels like, "we screwed around, we asked for this, we wanted this, and we don't like finding out."

Sure, pal. You are great at a lot of beating around the bush.

LMFAO!!!!!! mmmmky buddy. mmmkay. mmmhmmmm. Yes. Fani Willis was acting independently. Huge thumbs up.

Okay. With that, we can all conclude that everything is exactly as pancakes says it is. Yesssir. Even Hound is probably going to agree with everything now because the mugshot was not the DOJ, it was Fulton County. ;)

No. There is no bush to beat here. This is not the 80's.

You can ignore the structure and the process and make all your conclusions based solely on the outcome. You got this. I mean, no sense even understanding the workings of the machine, that's like a blue collar beneath you crap thing, right?
