Another article says he called Mormonism the "Anti-Christ", referencing the conversation with the city council guy. The two are quite related. If the perpetrator were to have a conversation with my right-wing friend they would agree on everything. My friend doesn't call Mormonism the anti-Christ directly to me, and I'm thinking he doesn't go that far, but if he's in a conversation with somebody else who is "going there", he's going to fan the flames and pat the guy on the back for it and laugh his head off. To be fair, most anti-Mormon EVs who do believe Mormonism is a Satanic cult aren't a threat. Some force themselves to invite you to dinner or give you free dental work, as happened to me. I mean, this kind of "being the bigger Christian" to those you deem your enemies is kind of positive, even if misguided. Well, this was a long time ago, not sure that happens much anymore.
But, all the main threads are right there in right-wing Christian gun culture to lead to exactly this. I don't think anyone thought upon hearing about the event that the perpetrator would be anything but an unhinged right-winger. Now, remove a couple of factors, and would he have made this decision? Probably not. I give it minimum 50% odds that he'd never had done this if the political murder the other week didn't happen, and if he didn't get stiffed by a Mormon girl when he was in Utah.
TurningPoint USA gives a platform to a pastor who regularly calls Mormonism "demonic." That is pretty irresponsible rhetoric, especially these days. I agree with you when you say that most EVs would not do this kind of horrific crime. Most people would not do this kind of horrific crime, let alone EVs. Most MAGA people would not do this kind of horrific crime. Most radical leftists would not perpetrate such a horrific crime.
At the same time, winding up a yo-yo and pointing him at a specific group is still irresponsible and unconscionable.

I think when people become disillusioned with the LDS Church, they tend to avoid the Book of Mormon and/or simply accept that the book reflects the cultural milieu surrounding Joseph - typically the reflections of Joseph’s life in Nephi and Mormon are cited as Joseph “writing himself into the book.” I’ve made a long hobby of exploring the other characters as reflecting Joseph’s companions in the book, and would be interested in your thoughts.
While I tend to agree with Twain’s comment that the book is “chloroform in print,” when I read it from an alternate perspective I see it as a murder mystery.

While I don't know what the motivation was, it seems pretty likely that the motive was hatred of Mormons.

The President issued a statement after the attack on the Mormon church in Michigan saying:

Nobody hates the Mormons as much as the Mormons. This whole conversation is ridiculous. A lot of self-congratulations and sticking fingers in Christians’ eyes to make an exmo crowd feel better than EV’s.
