I find myself agreeing with Res here. DCP is a vanishingly insignificant player in a very minor world religion. If religions were sports, he would be coach of a little league team in rural Montana.

The anti-Mormon violence is also boggling my mind. From a professing Christian, no less. I'm really thinking mental illness is the main factor here, and the religious elements are either vastly overplayed or made up entirely. I wouldn't put it past some in that ward to make up or embellish their recounting of events for spiritual purposes. DCP says there was an account of a Mormon being asked if they follow Joseph or Jesus... which may have happened, but it is a very common trope in Christian circles. It's seen as the ultimate test of faith and is a ready-made faith promoting tale.

I'm not saying these things couldn't have happened, I'm just skeptical until more evidence is collected.
Yeah, I’m a little skeptical of that myself. It was a trope in the Columbine school shootings and a couple of the following shootings.

It’s unfortunate that those with extreme views that seem to overcome basic human decency seem to be those that get the attention. The normal and humane God fearing Christians then get pulled into all the controversies.

The aberrant behaviors of a few should not dictate how we respond/relate to good/honest people of any religious or non-religious stripe.

Do you consider it a virtue to fear god?
To fear God, to me, is simply to recognize and/or seek for an all-knowing Creator that we ought to respect and give obeisance to. So yes, I think that it is a virtue to believe/have faith in some being/entity beyond ourselves that has an interest in us and has/will bless us according to His will and our obedience to His law/commandments.

That isn't fear. Fear is something an abused spouse feels when trapped in a relationship. Fear is trepidation for the oncoming wrath for not following a list of benign sometimes ridiculous oaths. A god fearing person appears to be worried about the power and punishment headed their way for not conforming. That is some terrible parenting.

I think that you realize that the word "fear" can have multiple meanings. In a religious sense it can refer to a person who strives to live a morally upright life, guided by the teachings and commandments of their religion. That person may be pious, honest, obedient, and earnest in their worship and faith practices.

Yes, there may be a certain sense of being accountable for one's actions and realizing that there is such a thing as "sin". To compare this, however, to being/feeling "trapped" and 'afraid of punishment' does sounds fear based. Has that been your experience?

So the God associated with the religious sect that you you were born and raised in knows that children are going to be harmed, and who let’s it happen, someone deserving of respect? Let’s say a parent allows their child to spend unsupervised time with a known child sex offender, on the basis that it supports your God’s plan to allow that child sex offender to exercise their agency - do you respect that parent? If not, what’s the difference?
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

Mere semantics and word sleuthing. There is a tier of colloquial meanings for words and your version appears to be a dodge to avoid the actual ramifications of following something based on fear. Might makes right is a horrific reason to follow an overlord.

Of course!
You fear who you worship? Something doesn't track. Are you okay with chattel slavery also?

Very original challenges/objections. I thought I had heard them all.

I know when I am overmatched. Can I just admit defeat and not answer your witty questions?

Why? I can't comprehend worshipping someone I feared.
