Yeah, the guy supported Trump, but I don't think that had anything to do with his crime. Here is my best guess:

The guy was damaged. Probably in war. It broke him. He got obsessed about Mormons, and the Christian anti-Mormon industry did not help there. It just provided content for his hatred. He finally lost it, partly because his marriage was unravelling, and so he acted on his illness and hatred against the nearest Mormons.

I recommend watching John Stewart's latest monologue on the harm we do to ourselves and our country when we fixate on the politics of these shooters. They are lone wolves until evidence shows otherwise. They may have this or that set of political views, but no one has a political platform that includes shooting up gathering places like schools or churches.

Why would a self professed Christian use a gif of a known sexual predator as some kind of smart ass retort on a message board? Is that really the act of someone trying to follow Christ?
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

I suspect the same might be the case for Nigel Edge - also a veteran, reportedly - who shot up a restaurant last Saturday and killed 3 people.

Indeed. I think it’s an exemplary way for how to handle tragedies like this. I hope the family finds some small comfort from it and it helps them heal. Bravo to the Saints who set this up and are donating.
Just using your comment to piggy-back an update. They have now raised almost $150,000 for the widow and children, and the goal has been raised again to $200,000. The way it's moving, I wouldn't be surprised if by tomorrow morning it has smashed the new fundraising goal.

And how much do you think the 300B church is going to help the families of the members who were killed?

I'll give you a hint. The target figure is oddly situated between a negative and positive number.

Thank you for this reasonable take. I agree that there is no mainstream American political party that has a platform that includes murdering people in schools or churches. I have been disappointed to see that there are some people who have celebrated murder recently, but I have yet to see anyone celebrate this church attack. Hopefully, no one does.

Agreed. I think the same is true in the Kirk murder. Crime of mental illness and possibly passion.
Ban Whiskey permanently if that's the only way.

I’m also thinking along those lines. I guess I think you have to be in a condition of mental irrationality to commit an atrocity of this nature. I know the toothpaste is out of the tube on this one, but widespread ownership of high performance firearms can’t be helping.
