Hi Tavares. Nice to see you. The idea of debating whether the victims are “worthy” of compassion is insane to me. Growing up LDS, I was proud of our differences from other religions. I got out before that part of the culture changed.
Nice to see you as well.

They call Mormons a cult. And yet they are really having this conversation.
I posted a Pew survey in another thread. Of the various categories, only the LDS folks expressed a net positive view of all other religious groups in the survey. The evangelicals had a decidedly negative view of LDS folks.
I thought that was very interesting. It may be that I am ridiculously good looking with the charm of John Dehlin, so I may be biased. But I've always received a warm welcome even when they thought Mormons are weird. And I had plenty of opportunities to to explain our weirdness to people who genuinely curious.
Tavares, A debate of the sort you refer to is beyond having a less than positive view of Mormons. At least to my understanding a Christian would have compassion on Mormon tragedy.

I realize there are people whose antimormon feelings are inflated like a disease. I imagine, perhaps with hope, that this is a small group. To reach a point of debating whether compassion is appropriate is to have lost Christian faith.

I have seen on YouTube a self important fellow claiming to have met alligator people in some subbasement of the Salt Lake temple. There are nuts attracted to antimormonism.

Still I may well be wrong but I have difficulty believing people are debating whether Mormon victims deserve compassion.

Rather than a replacement for creedal Christianity, the church would consider itself to be a restoration of lost truths.

Good point. Would those naysayers have us believe that the Office of the Stake President simply died out? It was one of the lost truths that has been restored via the Lord's language of Early Modern English.

The Office was banished by one of those so-called "creeds" and now it has been restored!!! This isn't just crazy talk by a TBM, it is the real thing.
I'm referring more to doctrines related to things like the Godhead, Christ's mission/nature/Atonement...stuff like that.

MG

MG, I think stake president is a come and go organizational arrangement. You are reasonably looking significant things. They are important enough to ask how you see LDS understanding to be different than or expanded from traditional Christian understanding. I am inclined to view them as fundamentally the same.

LDS doctrine differs fundamentally in views concerning the nature of God and the mission/teachings of Jesus Christ. Important similarities and important differences.

Gee MG you are fully capable of explaining yourself at length. Here? Is the subject not worth your time?

Hoping to encourage you. After all, there are less important matters taking up space.

I appreciate you saying this. There are a lot of LDS folks online who are trying to minimize the differences.

Well, it is well known that the LDS idea of Godhead is similar to but different from the idea of Trinity. Is the idea of sin, repentance, atonement, and renewal in the Holy Spirit different? Is the instruction to love neighbors different? The nature of God is love, would LDS see it differently? Do we have hope in Jesus?

What do you see as the most valuable difference Mormonism offers?
