Never happened. I've never had a DEI truck or some other kind of decked out vehicle celebrating DEI try to run me off the road. Aside from the latest tragedy at the hands of a Trump truck, I've personally had several close calls with Trump trucks. I do try to stay out of their way, understanding how sensitive these people are.

There are at least those hippy cars. Never been run off the road by one, though.

I understand that change can be unsettling. I also have relatives in their late eighties. But they were alive as young adults when segregation, rampant racism and the occasional lynching were still commonplace. It’s odd to consider - given what they’ve seen - that DEI would be the thing to rock their world.

I’m not even going to get into the fact that they also witnessed WWII, with some of those now bothered by DEI also being the same folks that are cheering on ever- increasing authoritarianism and nascent fascism.

I am far from being a member of Generation Z. However, correct me if I am wrong, but so far as I can see the various modifications to job recruitment procedures understood to constitute 'DEI' (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) are basically designed to deal with a situation in which:

(a) The senior members of some organisation seeking to recruit new staff are overwhelmingly members of one gender, and come from one ethnic and cultural background.

(b) Even though they may be free of any conscious bias to towards their own gender and ethno-cultural background, it is much easier for them to see people who share the same characteristics as themselves when as suitable candidates for employment than people of a different gender or background.

(c) As a result, recruits will tend to be selected from a talent pool in which talented candidates of gender and ethno-cultural background different to those of the recruiters are less likely to be seriously considered. In the overwhelming majority of cases, the recruiters are most likely to be white and male, and they will tend to recruit candidates who are themselves white and male. Because the talent pool is arbitrarily limited in this way, the average talent level of those recruited will be lower than it otherwise might have been if all candidates had been considered on equal terms.

To deal with this situation, which is unlikely to change spontaneously, various measures may be considered. One might be to specify that those shortlisted for interview must include a stated proportion of candidates having certain characteristics, such as being of a particular gender, or of a non-white ethnic group, while still meeting the stated qualifications for the post advertised. Since the recruiters will still have a free choice monists a pool of qualified candidates, it is not clear to me why anyone could object to that.

My point was simply to express my incredulity that after a long life of experience (much of which I have shared) they can't see that it will do us all good if the talent pool drawn on by recruiters is not, de facto, limited to white males, when there are so many other possible candidates who might do the job equally well or better. By the way, I am a white male myself.

Yes, I don’t see why people care about skin pigmentation. People are people.
