If you're going to start a Christian politics channel on YouTube today, you'll get way more views if you make the outrageous stuff your platform. In fact, if you aren't, you may get no views.

True. I was referring to particular things that I watched that were trying to reason and persuade on the topic of theonymy.

I didn't know that, thanks for the heads up. He's one of the many "junkyard dog", ironic Christians out there today, along with the rest of his cabinet, Fox hosts, WFC fighters etc. There are two camps here. One is actual Christian traditionalists. These people actually really do believe in the Bible and even believe in helping the poor (in their own way), they've gone to church their whole lives and over time, right-wing politics has slowly taken over their religious lives, but they still fundamentally do believe in God and Jesus and all that. The ironic Christians are the "bad boy" or "Bad girl" Christians who are going to "F you up" in the name of the Lord. Most of these don't actually believe in God, like the president and Hegseth. Can you tell me how many times he went to church in his life before he got involved with Wilson? Blasting the head off your dog while wearing a cross -- that's the brand.

These folks are extremely popular with the true believers much like Schryver was popular with the apologists, who billed himself as a Samuel Jackson in Pulp Fiction, a guy who read Ezekiel before offing his victims. The base admires their strength and pretends to believe that these folks are actually sincere. Fascism needs both kinds. I wouldn't say that one is morally preferable to the other. I have more sympathy for the fakers because there will always be bad people in the world, and I can't really blame bad people for taking such easy money off the table.

I love this bit of writing. Nicely done. I agree with you that there are these different types. Even true believers got tired of waiting for their time to come, so they hitched their wagon to the star that, no matter how terrible it was, promised to give them the sway they had long lusted after.

Speaking of theonomy, I just learned this morning that Ryan Walters resigned from his post last month. This is the now former superintendent of the Oklahoma school board. Oklahoma is as red as it comes and with that, of course, is last in the nation in terms of education. This is the guy who put Trump bibles in the classroom and made teachers attest to "America First" values and taught all this right-wing revisionist history. And of course, partnered with Prager U (the right-wing outlet that educates the dumbest of the dumb) for new materials and programs. It's also the guy who got caught watching porn at work on his laptop. And it turns out he was paying salaries to right-wing pundits who didn't do anything. This was our first experiment with theonomy in public education. It looks like even those who are broadly with the objectives of a theonomy weren't quite ready for it.

You mean Brigham or Seminary? It's a good point either way. I think the modern Church is content being a virtual theocracy. I had a relative who was extremely wealthy. As a personality, he was the ideal Mormon businessman, but the actual ideal, not the stereotypical self-righteous prick, the actual kind, generous, humble; never would know it if you met him on the street. He generally kept a low profile and vacationed a lot, but if he had something to say, everybody listened. Well, the truth is he was successful so long as he stuck with the model handed him from Dad. He wasn't an entrepreneur, and anytime he ventured out into other businesses, he lost money. At one time, he owned a business that your pal A-Mike patroned.

That's the Church today. However it got to where it is now, the leaders inherited the success and are are frightened to tears of changing anything -- they just want to continue their charade in peace. Unlike Joseph who ran for president and would have driven the nation into the ground as "your president" is doing, Oaks and the other losers just want to keep the money compounding and keep their own family dynastic fame with the Saints intact. They are happy with the physical hardware of the country as a land of liberty. The host is libertarian. The guest -- the virtual instance that makes up the Church is authoritarian. You ever hear of the SCA? The guys who camp and dress up as knights and do battle -- also authoritarian. It's a lot of fun for these people to pretend they have a king they must respect and all that. The contradiction of liberty is that we allow virtual instances of authoritarianism if that's what people want to do.

The Church seems content remaining a virtualized theonomy. They can't do anything without an army of Gentile consultants to advise them. They don't want the risk of calling the shots. They want to keep their little rent-seeking empire going for themselves and their families and buddies, and are very happy if a bunch of more creative sinners provide the real value to the world of which they are parasites.
