This year, Europe will likely spend nearly $1 trillion on energy. Although the continent has lived through energy crises before, this one has especially high stakes because of the confluence of geopolitical tensions and the raging debate over energy transition policy.

Europe really has no viable choice but to go green, despite Trump's ignorant dismissal of that reality.

Doubling Down for Climate and Energy Security
Europe will have to complement domestically produced green hydrogen with imports from other countries that have abundant resources and renewable power. The European Hydrogen Backbone project, planned by 22 gas transportation system operators, should be brought to life with urgency in the context of Europe’s sustained energy security, with its execution timeline pushed forward by at least five years.

Crucially, a green hydrogen import ecosystem would rely on a different mix of trade partners than the fossil fuel trade, thereby shifting geopolitical pressure away from relations with gas-rich countries. Importing green ammonia — which uses hydrogen instead of natural gas as a feedstock — from Brazil or Oman at $300–$600 per ton is already a viable economic proposition in Europe, where sustained high gas prices have led to shuttered fertilizer production facilities and record-high ammonia prices.

To put things in perspective, 10 million tons of green hydrogen produced in the EU could displace close to 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas. This means that Europe can substitute half of its current Russian gas imports by combining local green hydrogen production with an additional 10 million tons imported from North Africa and Ukraine via pipelines or shipped in as green ammonia.

It is time for Europe to double down on its energy transition efforts. By accelerating the scale-up of green hydrogen and renewables, the EU can meet its climate goals and become the master of its own energy security destiny.

What if we could effectively store millions of tons of carbon in a way that helps solve America’s housing crisis, creates jobs, and boosts manufacturing — all at once? This report sheds new light on a powerful and cross-cutting solution: manufacturing building products from upcycled biomass that’s already abundant across the United States.

RMI’s analysis investigates into the multiple benefits of converting the 400 million tons of underutilized biomass from farms, forests, and landfills into valuable building materials. We determined the scale of positive impacts by analyzing the life cycle of bio-based versus conventional building products in US home construction, US manufacturing capacity needs and resulting economic benefits, and the availability of low-value biomass feedstocks across the country.

We found that the United States could store 100 million metric tons of CO2 in new residential buildings over 25 years — equivalent to almost the entire state of California being covered by a forest that is storing carbon in its soil and trees. Additionally, this would keep more than 35 million tons of waste out of landfills, prevent wildfires, and create $79 billion in new manufacturing opportunities, 42,000 direct jobs, and 310,000 indirect jobs (including supplier and induced jobs) in domestic manufacturing, while enabling the construction of healthier, affordable homes.

Unlike many carbon removal solutions still in development, biomass building products are already commercially manufactured in the United States and globally. From insulation to flooring, wall panels to concrete alternatives, these products are market-ready and cost-competitive with conventional materials.

Consider the realm of medicine, for example. Doctors, after graduating from medical school and completing their residency, often display a surprising lack of common sense. It seems they have been conditioned by the medical association to accept a singular narrative, and any attempt to deviate from this indoctrination results in ostracism and a return to complete compliance. Despite completing college, medical school, and a residency lasting three to seven years, doctors often remain uninformed about diet and what dietary advice to provide their patients!

In the early 1990s, when doctors, scientists, college professors, and nutritionists all rallied around the idea that the food pyramid represented the optimal approach to a healthy diet, obesity rates, cancer rates, and overall health metrics have deteriorated. It would help to see what claims the wider scientific community has made about climate change that Hound disagrees with, and why. As this is now, it’s just another complaint by Hound about a Marxist conspiracy that he cannot define and that doesn’t exist.
