Anyhow, you blew it again on a couple of points:

1. ‘Democrats’ in 1860 fractured along state lines, either for or against slavery. However, Republicans did the same, being generally against slavery for new territories but not necessarily for abolition in existing territories or states, due to perceptions of slavery’s effects on the white population (versus the concern for slaves themselves), specifically fears that wealthy southern planters would buy up most of the best available land in new territories, leaving only the least desirable land for white northern homesteaders.

2. Our family has experienced robbery (property, vehicle, and being ‘jumped’), lived in two neighborhoods where gunfire noise was super common, watched our neighbor’s house be forcibly entered by thieves (had to call police, obviously), watched at least 2 vehicles be set ablaze, and had plenty of gang members milling about within adjacent blocks. So much for your claims about other folks in ‘safe neighborhoods’.

That aside, there’s always going to be an anecdote from somewhere about someone who claims that they ‘feel safe’ with the National Guard picking up trash nearby, but that only lasts until they end up still experiencing violence someday anyway. Unless you believe that Trump is replacing police forces nationwide with Guard troops that will be everywhere and forever, the reality is that bringing up the Guard is solely a temporary stunt that ignores the real, root, and lasting problems existing in many areas. A stunt offering no true solution while using people within those neighborhoods as nothing more than racially-profiled political props.

Maybe we can check in with Braylon’s Memphis neighbors in a few more weeks to see how they’re getting along with having SNAP benefits denied to them by Trump.
