Why not? I don’t think you really understand the song. You heard “Imagine there’s no heaven”…”and no religion to” and jumped to a conclusion that it was an anti-God and anti-Religion song. Which it isn’t.

Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

Re: Zeppelin
Thank you for the correction. Something didn't look quite right when I typed it. I had all their vinyl's...probably to my parent's chagrin. Unfortunately, I can't say that there was any real redeeming value to all of the time I spent listening to them. A bit of hearing loss though I would imagine.
I should have been listening more to Elder Haight.
Unfortunate.

Do you think the music and other influence you are referring to have had a positive or detrimental effect overall in your life? It's kind of hard to say, in a way, because we don't know sometimes what we woulda', coulda', shoulda' been if not for some of those things we were pretty stupid about, right?

As another reminder, in addition to the thread which dealt exclusively with this matter:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=160605
...there are some posters I have on ignore in the sense that I will not interact with them. It makes life much more pleasant. Saves ALOT of time. I've seen that in the last week or two (I don't think I was around much for a week or so contribution wise), there have been the usual posters (on ignore) that have shown up and piled on after I've posted.
I will not respond to the 'stupid stuff' (including memes or pictures) or the simple attacks, inappropriate language, or dumb questions (questions that have obvious answers if asked of a believer...waste of time).
Moving on...

Exactly.
Back to the music! I'd like to hear more from Shulem about his experiences with this topic.

I was BIC and grew up in Mormonism but revolted at a very early age and loved rock and roll music -- the heavy stuff out of the late 60's and early 70's. In 6th grade, my friend Gary brought the Led Zeppelin 4th album to school and our lady teacher who was fresh out of college let us play it while doing art. She was cool and was Buddhist. We snuck down into the woods during recess and that is when I smoked my first Camel cigarette with the guys. Oh how fun that was! And my classmate, Brett, he ripped some barbiturates from his mother's medicine cabinet and we popped those one day in school and I could hardly keep my head up during class. That was 6th grade and getting ready for junior high, literally smoking in the boy's room! Junior high was a gas and thanks to rock and roll music (screw the Aaronic priesthood) there were plenty of reasons to rebel. Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, and Pink Floyd. Dark Side of the Moon!!
Woohoo! And yes, on acid the walls would breathe and the floor would wobble about and the music sounded so real and colorful. But I wasn't an acid head and didn't do it too many times. But I knew how to have a good time no thanks to the church.
I'm proud that I rebelled. But, I repented and then went on a mission to London England. All that good stuff. Married in the temple and had kids too. Ugh!

It's nice that everything turned out well for you. Deep Purple: My Woman from Tokyo. Smoke on the Water. Good stuff. Southern California bum. I am glad that I was able to come out the other end having lost some of my stupidity having gained some wisdom from my errors. Not all of my stupidity, of course. There needs to be enough of it (natural man) to feel a prompting to repent now and then.Shulem wrote: ↑Mon Nov 24, 2025 10:44 pmI was BIC and grew up in Mormonism but revolted at a very early age and loved rock and roll music -- the heavy stuff out of the late 60's and early 70's. I had a couple of friends that weren't so lucky. They bailed out (died from overdose/suicide) while still in High School. Never got a chance to play it straight. Unfortunately, I think there are not a few people who made it through those times that never did get their act together.
Stupid is, stupid does...without learning anything.

Oh wow, thank you! I wish I'd heard some of that music sooner-- but my husband will love hearing your list. We follow a local old school band here that we go see two or three times a year, their set lists are straight out of your Jr high experience!! I'm starting to get to know them, but my husband knows every song, inside and out. I think you two would get along.Shulem wrote: ↑Mon Nov 24, 2025 10:44 pmI was BIC and grew up in Mormonism but revolted at a very early age and loved rock and roll music -- the heavy stuff out of the late 60's and early 70's. Re: The Long and Winding Road (To Ruin) or Eight Days a Week (Of Woe): Mormon Apostle Blames the Beatles for Society's I
I think church leaders are right in being concerned about the music of the day and the possible negative influences it can have over the hearts and minds of young people and even those that are not so young.
So, here's the problem, MG. I knew you were going to say you liked the Beatles. The care-free beach bum from SoCal who listened to the Beatles. It's not possible for you to "like the Beatles", to be in good standing with God, and for the Beatles to have triggered many of societies serious ills like an apostle said. That's like saying I like smoking, but not to the exclusion of everything else.I liked the Beatles. I also like Led Zepplin. But if those two rock groups and many others I could name were and/or had been the major drivers/influences in my life
It's cafeteria Mormonism, if you're looking for a good example of that. It reinforces what I've suspected, that Mormonism is just what you grew up with, and you're really attached to the comfortable life that went along with it as a whole. You'd have no friction if you advocated for your faith congruent to how serious you actually take it. If it was just like, "hey, it's a good church" and there's lots of good churches and this just works for you, everyone is like, "oh cool, enjoy it". But you're obsessed with the party line, that it's the only true church, that the leaders are God's mouthpiece for the entire world. That unless people visit and revisit, and test the seed over and over until they accept it that they've doomed themselves.
If your church is the only pure source of truth on the planet and everyone who rejects it or hasn't heard about it is missing out so much, then when a prophet says the Beatles are directly responsible for many ills of a society as a whole, then that means you quit liking the Beatles immediately.
Lost Gospel of Thomas 1:8 - And Jesus said, "what about the Pharisees? They did it too! Wherefore, we shall do it even more!"
