The Lord's one true football team humiliated on the field

Post by drumdude »

It looks like the church leaders need to make an even softer schedule for BYU to buy them a national championship.

I have to admit, after seeing a certain LDS blogger brag about BYU's football success the last couple years, it's satisfying to see such a resounding defeat.

BYU's second half:

Missed field goal
Interception leading to Tech TD
Punt
Fumble leading to Tech TD
Turnover on downs leading to Tech TD
Fumble leading to Tech TD
Punt

Mormon God was really in a mischievous mood today.

Every year since 1984 I’ve celebrated BYU’s first loss of the year. Not for religious reasons, but because it seemed wrong that the national championship game that year was on Dec 20th if I remember right, against a 6-5 Michigan team.

BYU just didn't look like it belonged on the same field as Texas Tech. However, it's being reported that BYU will commit almost $30 million per year to pay its football players. They should be able to buy some great talent with that kind of money.

From Cougarboard:
For the next few years Looks like negotiations with Coach Sitake led to this as reported in Open for Business.

“According to On3’s Pete Nakos, BYU is giving Sitake a raise from around $4 million in annual salary to over $9 million. The Cougars are also committing to spend $10 to $15 million over the revenue-sharing cap annually for football. Most football programs are expected to get around $14 million from revenue sharing, meaning BYU is committing to spending between $24 and $29 million every year on its football roster.CBS Sports reports that BYU paid just $10 million for its current roster. The Cougars are now looking at spending nearly three times that amount moving forward.

I cannot understate how important that is for the future of BYU football. Sitake flirting with Penn State actually turned into a blessing in disguise for Cougars fans. With that level of financial commitment, BYU can theoretically put together a roster that can compete with Texas Tech. Multiple reports pegged this year’s Tech roster at around $28 million.

Tech and BYU are best positioned to be the kingpins of the league with their combination of financial commitment and head coaches in place..”

The cameras were always showing the BYU crowd with their hands clasped in prayer. And you can bet they were. As they walked out of the stadium they started the rationalization including wondering why Satan won.

So Deion's team is not the Lord's team? Damnit.

Where does the additional $10-15 million come from?

With professional sports, who ever pays the most in wages, consistently season after season, will come to dominate the league. It’s simple maths and statistics. If BYU spends the most on wages, consistently season after season, it won’t be faith that’s helping them triumph.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

Well, BYU is going to pay Sitani ~$10M/year now Thanks to Penn State trying to poach him, AND BYU committed to increasing its NIL budget to $15M/year. I’m sure the college football arms race is about to explode. Do not be surprised when you see $100M/year player budgets. What Indiana did this year will have big programs like USC and Miami tripping over themselves to be the next big rebuild storyline.

I think the days of USC and Miami being big programs are about to come to a permanent end. Now that it is an actual pay to play league, schools like BYU, Vanderbilt and Tulane are going to be very competitive in their conferences for a very long time. That said, after yesterday's blowout, Chase Roberts said he hoped BYU could keep Bear. Interesting.

I was watching Vanderbilt this year, VANDERBILT!, and thinking something along the lines of, “College football is going to get a lot more expensive.”

Watch what happens with LSU over the next few years, too. I bet they throw assloads of money at their players.

What would be awesome is if college football introduces promotion and relegation for BCS eligibility every year.
