Jeffrey R. Holland, a high-ranking official in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who was next in line to become the faith’s president, has died. He was 85.

Holland died early Saturday morning from complications associated with kidney disease, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced on its website.

Holland, who died in Salt Lake City, led a governing body called the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, which helps set church policy while overseeing the many business interests of what is known widely as the Mormon church.

He was the next longest-tenured member of the Quorum of the Twelve after President Dallin H. Oaks, making him next in line to lead the church under a long-established succession plan.

Henry B. Eyring, one of Oaks’ two top counselors, is now next in line for the presidency.

Is the church approaching the time when apostles are dying faster than their replacements can be sustained in General Conference?

What was it that Dorothy Parker asked, when told that President Coolidge was dead?

Oh yes - "How can they tell?"

To paraphrase Bette Davis:

You should never say bad things about the dead, you should only say good… Jeff Holland is dead. Good.

Rest in peace to a guy who, although he was caught lying for the lord, seemed like one of the better leaders.

I wish him luck as he meets the Savior for the first time. Given his track record, he’ll need a lot of it.

I’ve read that he was admitted to hospital, and presumably died, due to ongoing kidney disease.
LDS Church officials announced that Holland passed away at around 3:15 am MST on Saturday, December 27. While an official cause of death has not been confirmed, he was admitted to the hospital with complications associated with kidney disease, as reported by FOX13.
There seems to be a number of possible causes of kidney disease. His ongoing obesity and age won’t have helped.

People get old, people die. The Brethren will see more than average mortality levels, as a result of the cohort being increasingly elderly. It’s a sad time for his family, for everyone else the world keeps turning. He’ll be remembered for his “wrong road” talk, the “Hell’s Angel” fabricated story that he had to retract and apologise for, and calling for “musket fire”, and for holding up a fake Hyrum Smith Book of Mormon at Conference that time. And for reading a few books and for going to a good school and for not being a Dodo.
Premise 1. Eyewitness testimony is notoriously unreliable.
Premise 2. The best evidence for the Book of Mormon is eyewitness testimony.
Conclusion. Therefore, the best evidence for the Book of Mormon is notoriously unreliable.

The crowning achievement of his life was being on a first name basis with a young apologist named Dan.

I sometimes wonder as these leaders get older and approaching death if doubt creeps in especially when healing blessings repeatedly fail. Or an overall doubt as they wonder if Jesus isn't who they think he is and they might have some explaining to do.
