In a DSA video from March 2021 that has since gone viral, Weaver said, "I think the reality is that for centuries, we have really treated property as an individualized good and not a collective good."
She went on to say that "transitioning to treating it as a collective good towards a model of shared equity, will require that we think about it differently."
Weaver said this "will mean that families, and white families especially, but some POC [people of color] families who are homeowners as well, are going to have a different relationship to property than the one that we currently have."
This is from 6 years ago, and her personal opinions at that time don’t count as policy today. And whatever her parents are living in has no bearing on this.
She’s not wrong about these statements, really. Read them carefully. Any claims about them should be specific. I don’t think that Hound will rise to that call.
Regarding the bolded portion in the first part of the blue text … again, she’s not wrong, as this is exactly what happened in major metropolitan areas like Phoenix as late as the 1970s, where black families were essentially shut out of the ability to purchase property in most areas of that city and suburbs, and instead relegated to small, poorer areas like South Phoenix.
Another great example is found in studying the history of Levittown, NY, one of the first modern ‘tract home’ suburbs. Completed in the late 1950s, sales contracts contained racist clauses preventing black ownership:
“The tenant agrees not to permit the premises to be used or occupied by any person other than members of the Caucasian race. But the employment and maintenance of other than Caucasian domestic servants shall be permitted.”
These kinds of restrictions cost black families dearly in terms of generational wealth accumulation. While white families prospered through home ownership, the same benefit was largely denied to black families until much later.
